What do you think about the 1.8-liter gasoline engines?
Putting aside purely faith-based beliefs about spontaneous combustion, are these engines technically as advanced as VW's TDI engines?
Or are they experiencing more problems with the turbocharger, clutch, or a shorter lifespan?

The 1.8 T is definitely one of the most refined and fuel-efficient gasoline engines from VW. Its lifespan is also decent. There used to be problems with the standard pop-off valve, especially when the car was chipped, but that has improved. Also, if needed, you can easily replace that cheap part with a better valve.
Without a chip, the engine (the 150 hp version) feels a bit restricted above approximately 4500 RPM. However, this issue is easily corrected with a chip. Regarding reliability, you only need to look at some of the extreme tuning modifications that people use, which easily rack up the kilometers. I can only recommend it. With a conservative driving style, even with a chip, it's possible to achieve fuel consumption figures of around 6-6.5 liters per 100 kilometers in the Golf.
Regards,
Olaf.

In the German magazine 'Auto Bild,' there was once an article about a company that repaired turbochargers.
'This company stated that the turbocharger for the 1.8T gasoline engine, which is part of the VAG group, is quite prone to failure and would be among their best customers.'
Best regards, D.
