Polo 9N3: Check fuel pump after timing belt change

My Polo 9N3 (3-cylinder diesel engine with DPF and BWB) has a faulty hydraulic lifter. Consequently, the camshaft also needs to be replaced.

I had the head unit serviced by a specialist who, at the same time, replaced all the wear parts and adjusted the PD elements.

I once read somewhere that after a re-installation, you might need to re-check or readjust the start of the pumping process?

Okay, in the image, the value 4 refers to the "rotation angle."
Ideally, the value should be between 0° and -0.5°. +/-2° is acceptable if the engine is running well.

You can log the measurement data to a file.

Please note, due to the extreme cold outside: The synchronization angle is relatively uncritical within a certain range; it is sufficient if it falls within the tolerance range specified in the tooltip.

However, it should be noted that the values a) may change slightly after the first few kilometers with a new timing belt, and b) the values are different when the engine is warm compared to when it is cold. The reason is that the warm engine block is slightly larger than a cold one, and because the tensioner only allows a slight shift in the rotational axis of the shaft on one side, one shaft rotates slightly relative to the other.

The values should therefore be checked with the engine at operating temperature, as a reading that is close to the limit when the engine is cold may become even worse when the engine is warm.

As promised, here's the feedback from the evening's experiment:

At first, I thought everything was fine.
The radio was turned off, and the MSG (Modular Signaling Gateway) responded immediately during the error scan.
However, STG 03 did not respond again.

In the control unit selection process, the MSG did not respond again.

I haven't disconnected the battery yet.

Could it also be related to the fact that I'm running Windows on my MacBook using VMware Fusion?

Okay, now the measurement is working!

However, I recently acquired an old Windows laptop.
Now it works.

According to the data, the twist angle at the operating temperature of the engine is -2.3°.

Is it still within the acceptable range, or what?
The engine is running smoothly, like a purring kitten. And the fuel consumption was 4.6 liters according to the display after a highway drive today. Yes, I was driving slowly!

I'd also be interested to know: Does this suggest a later or earlier start of the boost? And what are the theoretical implications? I would prefer the engine to be optimized for longevity.

The start of the boost is not affected by the NW setting, but the timing of pressure buildup in the pre-combustion chambers and the valve timing. Currently, the NW setting is slightly too early.
