Have you tried contacting them through their goodwill policy? In the "Problems/Solutions" section, there's an article about Volkswagen's goodwill policy. It describes this exact problem with the 3B engine. Perhaps you might still qualify based on your mileage or the age of the vehicle?

What about the goodwill policy when you install the parts yourself? In the case of the stabilizer link, it was just stated that it costs around 100 euros, and there was no mention of any goodwill at that time. When they showed me the part, which can actually be replaced in a few minutes, I said I would install it myself (which still cost 30 euros). I have someone who can get me the parts for about 25% cheaper (which is still around 220 euros, if their diagnosis is correct).
