Hello professionals, icon_smile.gif

I performed an oil change on my Golf VI TDI with a 77 kW engine – not for the first time. This time, the engine is leaking oil. Replacing the sealing ring didn't help much, but tightening the filter housing cover to 50 Nm instead of 24 Nm helped somewhat.
My question: Could the oil pressure be too high due to a defect? What could be the possible causes?
A fault query using VCDS-RKS shows no errors; everything is working correctly.

Greetings.

What engine (model code) are we talking about?

I find it hard to believe that the oil pressure is too high. Are you using the correct filter and have you replaced the sealing ring?

Possibly, the lid has a crack or damage above the sealing ring, which means it is now only sealed by the flat surface at the threaded connection. Normally, they seal as soon as the O-ring contacts the cylindrical surface when being screwed in.

Hello Uncle BM, icon_smile.gif

I'm glad it will be related to the oil filter housing. I'll check that more closely now. The engine code is: CAYC.

I'll let you know as soon as I find out more.
Best regards.

Hi,

Was definitely the old seal removed?
It has happened before that two rings were placed on top of each other.

Hi Roger,
Definitely do not stack two O-rings on top of each other.
Best regards.

Hello Uncle BM,
Hello Roger,

I tightened the oil filter housing cap a bit more, and it seems to be sealed now. I used 50 Nm of torque; hopefully, that's not too much.
The filters and seals are original VW replacement parts. I would prefer a softer and wider sealing ring or a permanently elastic sealant. If you have anything like that available, I'd be interested in trying it.

Thank you for the tip that it shouldn't be due to excessive oil pressure; that has helped me. icon_smile.gif

Best regards.

Was the sealing ring lightly lubricated with oil beforehand?

I wouldn't leave it like that. It's probably just a matter of time before it starts leaking again.

As I said, the O-ring seals, not the lip of the lid!

Hello to everyone who has responded to me. icon_smile.gif

I've done many oil changes before, but this is only the second one for a diesel engine. My plan is to have another filter change after an oil pressure measurement. I'm curious to see if everything will be normal then.

It was nice to meet some of you diesel mechanics.
Best regards.

Hello!

I can report that I have experienced similar problems multiple times with cheap oil filters.
However, the O-rings included were also visibly of a somewhat unusual quality.

Hello Steffen,
Yes, it's probably the sealing ring.
Greetings,
