ECU Software Updates: Current Versions

Hello everyone,

Is there a way to find out if Audi (and other manufacturers) offer software updates for certain control units in a vehicle, specifically for the engine and transmission?

I'm currently looking at a Q3 (quattro S Tronic, 177 hp, first registration 04/2013), but the question is likely of interest to others as well.

I'm afraid that if I ask about it during my next service appointment, it will be charged to me (at least if there isn't a corresponding TPI report).

The "easiest" way is to search the web for the VAG part number of the relevant control unit and then compare the software version.
