Golf 3 TD Airbag Control Unit - VAG COM 3.11

Hello, I'm experiencing the classic airbag warning light issue - the sensor under the passenger seat was briefly dislodged during cleaning, and now the airbag light is on.
Car: Golf 3 Variant TD, manufactured in 1998 (AAZ, 75 horsepower), ABS, Airbag, Exhaust gas recirculation.
On my old laptop, I still have VAG COM 3.11 and a USB Serial Adapter with FITS chip. However, I am unable to establish a connection with any control device, whether by plugging it in and starting it before turning on the ignition, or when the ignition is on, regardless of whether I use a baud rate of 9600 or 4800.
The adapter is found at COM2, and is listed as a USB-Serial adapter at COM2 in the Control Panel (Win XP). The LED indicates communication attempts from the VAG COM. Only, no response.
Does anyone know any old tricks?

PS: Whoever has to disconnect their airbag while cleaning probably already had one on their plate
