Hi!

My old T4, the typical work van, has a paint job in "traffic cone orange."
Just the usual stuff, a single-layer university course, which should be familiar.
I had some free time recently, and I did some rust treatment and cleaning in the lower part of the driver's cab.

I also managed to do a pretty good job; I repainted the lower sections.

The rest of the car's paint is quite faded. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can restore the old paint to a somewhat decent condition so that it looks more uniform?
Grüße, Steffen!

Hello,

"3M" offers a polishing compound specifically designed for this purpose, which removes slightly more material than typical consumer-grade products. This allows you to effectively remove dull spots by removing the layers of paint.

Best regards, Rainer.

Basically, you can use any polish, even cheap ones, because you just want to restore the shine and don't need to eliminate every tiny imperfection.
It's important that the polish is designed for use with a machine, and that you use one. If you use it by hand, it will take forever, and it won't last long because you remove far too little material. icon_wink.gif

If you don't have a polishing machine, ask at a local car body shop or detailing service; they sometimes rent them out for €10-20 per day.

Color refreshing...

Given the keyword "faded," I can imagine that a substance could be used to affect something containing colored pigments. For an orange finish, I would use something with red pigments. However, the disadvantage is that this also only has a limited lifespan, and it needs to be reapplied regularly to achieve a lasting improvement in the visual appearance.

Otherwise, consider whether it might be worthwhile to paint even the less visible areas. If you use a commercial vehicle paint as a basis for determining the amount of work and paint selection, it should still be affordable. You just need to decide if it's worth it to you.

Hi,
"I once did something similar to my old Fiat Cinquecento. When I got it at the young age of 17, the paint, which was originally a glossy red, was more of a dull reddish-brown and so weathered that even touching it would leave your fingers reddish-brown. I used a red and white polishing compound (because all the other polishes I had in the basement didn't remove enough material). The original red color and some of the shine became visible again; however, the Fiat paint is so thin that it's easy to polish right through to the primer. Around the corner from me, there's an old construction site Polo in orange, and the paint surface looks exactly like the Cinquecento did before I treated it. I'd like to try it on a corner to see if it works... and definitely with a machine. I did it by hand in several stages back then, and I would only use a machine now."

Best regards,
olli

Hello!
Yes, I have a polishing machine, but to be honest, I've never really used it.

@ Hatdriver:
No, I won't be doing a full repaint; the car only cost 500 euros.
I'm pretty good at small jobs, but with larger projects, I don't have enough experience. Also, it's too much effort for me.

I'm going to ask a friend who's a painter if he can give me some guidance on polishing.
Grüße, Steffen!

Red paint finishes (and similar ones) are prone to bleeding.

I then used red and white polishing paste
. That would be my choice as a fine polishing paste to get even better results. Simple polish won't help anymore.
Sure, here's the translation:

I just saw that on the old Tornadorot as well.

With a tube of Rot-Weiss polishing compound and a fine polish for metallic paints (1Z), you can restore it.

Only with the abrasive paste icon_biggrin.gif must one be careful.

And if you don't have a decent polishing machine on hand (the good ones are quite expensive).
Is manual labor still the best solution?
You'll still have to do some manual work with any device.

Preserve it, and don't forget about it later.

Red paint jobs (and similar ones) tend to bleed.

It's not just with metallic paints that this applies: the best way to protect the finish is to maintain the surface of the paint well.
So, use as little polishing compound as possible (as it removes paint), and instead, wash it thoroughly. For example, once a year, put in the effort to apply carnauba wax to the car. icon_idea.gif

It would be better to do it more often (e.g., in the spring and before the onset of winter weather), but who has that much time and inclination...

Even a vehicle that is over 10 years old will still look great, and the surface will not become dull (or chalky).

Best regards, Rainer.

Under the brand name "Rotweiss," there are countless products, ranging from very fine to highly efficient pastes that effectively remove material. These products can be used, for example, to remove a cracked or peeling clear coat layer.

Large, flat surfaces without ridges or contours can be processed using a machine. However, manual work is unavoidable in edge areas, on textured surfaces, or when dealing with adjacent or protected parts.

The polishing machines offered to DIY enthusiasts are best suited for applying a wax sealant to undamaged paint. Professional-grade machines usually have smaller polishing pads and can achieve higher speeds. It's a good idea to work under supervision with these machines before tackling more demanding projects, as it's possible to create unwanted effects by sanding into the paint and color layers.
