Hello everyone,
Unfortunately, my hearing aid is having a few issues, and I need some other opinions on it.
After the last inspection, including a timing belt replacement, I noticed a strange noise when releasing the clutch as I was driving out of the garage with the window open. The noise disappears when engaging the clutch without being in gear. It's a clattering, unusual sound. After about 1 km, the noise goes away. I can't say for how long the noise has been there, as it's only noticeable with the window open and after a cold start. I then took it to the workshop, and since the clutch was due for replacement anyway, a complete clutch kit including the dual-mass flywheel (DMF) was installed. Unfortunately, the noise still hasn't disappeared. Everything was replaced again under warranty, but unfortunately, that didn't improve anything, and the mechanic thinks it might be an impending crankshaft bearing failure. I recorded the noise (alternating between pressing and releasing the clutch) and hope you have other ideas. If it is indeed a bearing problem, I need to start thinking about getting a different car.
Thank you and best regards.
Reuselkopp.

Hi,

Did the clutch kit include the release bearing, and was it replaced? Is the pilot bearing okay? Is the transmission properly bolted to the engine block?

Based on my gut feeling, I would almost rule out problems with the crankshaft bearings, because bearing issues tend to worsen when the engine oil is heated and becomes thinner – but in your case, the noise disappears.

If you're in a gear and hear a noise when you try to accelerate, you can also rule out problems with the bearings inside the transmission itself. If nothing is turning there, otherwise the car wouldn't move.

Best regards, Rainer.

Hello Rainer,
Thank you for your feedback. Yes, the release bearing was always included in the set. It was always a complete kit from Sachs. As for whether the pilot bearing is okay, I can't say. I had to figure out what it even was. I thought the pilot bearing was the crankshaft bearing. Is it lubricated by engine oil, or is it a ball bearing? I suppose you can't screw the gearbox on incorrectly twice in a row and get the same bad result. The noise hasn't changed after having it replaced twice.
I will talk to the mechanic again about the pilot bearing.

Thank you and best regards.
Reuselkopp.

Hi,

The crankshaft on the clutch side has a plain bearing lubricated by oil pressure in these engines.
The pilot bearing centers the gearbox shaft on the crankshaft, ensuring that both shaft ends are aligned.

Best regards, Rainer.

Silly me, I checked and you're right. icon_cool.gif

Why actually? There are even providers that offer conversion services.

Hi,
Okay, so since there's no pilot bearing involved, I don't need to ask any further questions. Could it possibly be related to the fact that I tried a different type of engine oil? Usually, I always use Mobil 1 Formular esp 5w-30, but during the last oil change (about 1000 km ago), I used Mannol energy combi LL 5w-30 instead.

Reuselkopp.

More likely no, but another, albeit quite unpleasant, possibility is that there's play in the transmission input shaft.

Best regards, Rainer.

Hi,
Thank you very much for all the answers.
Either I'm completely misunderstanding something, or I don't get it. I thought the input shaft doesn't rotate at all when the clutch is engaged. Or are you saying that, in a simplified way, the clutch disc is tilted due to the play in the shaft and then rubs against the dual-mass flywheel (DMF) or friction disc when disengaging? But if so, why does it disappear after a few meters of driving?

Regards,
Reuselkopp.

Yes. What possibilities do you see?

Definitely an interesting topic; I suspect the solution won't be visible until you separate the engine and transmission. icon_wink.gif

The ERF as an O2M doesn't have a pilot bearing. I realized that myself when I changed the clutch some time ago. I really can't understand what a conversion kit is supposed to achieve in this case.

Okay, let's switch to a different question. Have you ever changed the oil in the transmission, and is the fill level correct? I also once had a noise that I would describe differently, but that's very subjective. After changing the transmission oil, everything was fine again. If not, I would start there, because the transmission input shaft spins when the car is idling...

I would rule out engine oil for now...

Hello matthiasTDI96,

As far as I know, the transmission oil has never been changed, and to be honest, I've also never checked to see if there's enough in it.

"However, I don't hear any noises when the engine is idling; it only happens when the clutch pedal is pressed. Even a slight touch of the pedal produces a noise, which gets louder as the pedal is pressed further. Today, I listened again and I think I can also hear a faint noise when the car is warm."

What do you think about the diagnosis of crankshaft bearing damage?

Regards,
Reuselkopp.

I don't believe that. I also can't see clearly. Of course, the clutch applies pressure to the driveshaft. But what would surprise me is its occurrence with very little pedal travel and its disappearance when the engine is warm. If I remember correctly, my Golf had a slight vibration or pulsing in the pedal with minimal clutch engagement. However, that could be caused by all sorts of things: dual-mass flywheel, clutch disc, spring, release bearing...

If there's still the original oil in there, changing it wouldn't hurt. Besides, the clutch is new anyway.

As I said, this is just my gut feeling. I would stay still and listen further.

Update:
I've now driven another 1500 km, and the noise hasn't changed. I suspect there's a problem with the transmission. When I accelerate hard and then release the clutch while shifting, you can hear a slight rattling sound. I'll change the transmission oil soon to see if it makes any difference. Otherwise, the gears shift smoothly. I'll continue to monitor the situation and report back.
