Hi there,

I hope I'm posting in the right category.

Below is a brief explanation of my problems and plans.
Last week, I bought a relatively inexpensive Passat with a 1.9 TDI engine, and it required a manageable amount of work initially.
The original problem was that the bearing of the viscous coupling's shaft had failed.
I want to change it, then.

After several problems getting the front of the car into the service position, I was finally able to remove the viscous fan to inspect the bearing.
Then I removed the retaining ring that secures the bearing.
However, the bearing was very, very stuck. So, I built myself a puller (also known as a "Wixer") and tried to remove the bearing. As I mentioned, it was very tightly fitted. I didn't have a heat gun available, so I decided to completely disassemble the console and work on it at home, in a warm and quiet environment.
The screws on the bracket came loose quickly, but then I realized that both the power steering pump and the water pump are attached to it. I wanted to at least remove the power steering pump so I could take the bracket out. I've loosened the screws, but because of the pulley, they don't come out far enough to completely free the pump.

I need help now.
I am grateful for any advice.

Okay, just to be clear:
-The bearing housing for the fan shaft needs to be removed, but it's quite stuck.
-To expand the console, the power steering pump needs to be removed.
Of course, I can also explain how everything can be directly addressed and resolved on the vehicle.
P.S. Are there any parts that should be replaced at the same time?

Warmest regards and many thanks, Nobbe.

Hi.

Remove the pulley, and then the power steering pump can be removed as well.

I recently had the same problem with an AFN. I managed to extract the part by using a suitable socket, threaded rod, and a pressing tool; it was really difficult.

Removing the part with the help of heat and cold was relatively easy.

Hi, thanks for your reply. Is the pulley only secured with those three screws? I have it outside, but I can't even get the glass off with a two-arm puller.
Thank you and greetings.

You just have to use a hammer to loosen it; it's really stuck on there, and the rust has practically fused it to the flange.

But don't hammer directly onto the pulley from the front; that will introduce forces into the pump's shaft that it cannot handle icon_wink.gif.

And then reattach the pump and console.

Letting a rust remover soak can also help.
