Access Permission: Function 16 Not Selectable

Hi!

My colleague replaced the ABS control unit in his Audi A4 B6 2.5 TDI, and I'm trying to code it. The coding keeps resetting to 00000. I read up on it and found out that this is likely because the steering angle sensor also needs to be calibrated with the new control unit. So far so good... However, to do that, I need to enter an access code, but that field is no longer selectable in VCDS; it's grayed out. The same thing is happening with other cars and other control units; I just tried it on my Golf. My question: What am I doing wrong?

I'm also encountering the same problem here: I was trying to enable FIS and GRA for someone who had retrofitted those features.
Unfortunately, I am unable to access the "Coding II" function in the brake control unit, which is required according to my instructions.
"In addition to the error stored in the control unit for the braking electronics indicating that the basic setting for the steering angle (G85) is missing, performing this setting results in 'Steering Angle' being displayed in green in the Diagnostic Information System (DIS)."
Will this go away after a longer drive?

There are "instructions" circulating on the web, compiled by various unreliable sources, which are simply incorrect.

Depending on the specific model configuration and year of manufacture, certain features may be available that are not possible in other vehicles of the same type but with different configurations or from a different model year.
Apparently, for my A6 4F alone, there are things that supposedly need to be coded, which might not even be possible. Of the instructions copied together in my example, the intended use is printing them out and using them as toilet paper in more than half of the cases.

I'm increasingly annoyed by the mindless posting of copied "coding tutorials" on every corner of the internet. Now, everyone with a website is just copying each other's "coding pages." It would be best to ask them what they were thinking and what the basic requirements are for a particular function.
In very rare cases, you will receive a meaningful answer.

If you want to know what the author of the instructions intended -> the best thing to do is ask them directly. I am not familiar with the specific "instructions" or the thoughts of the creator/copier.

Some control units do not support Coding II, but instead offer features like Security Access. VCDS usually correctly indicates which functions a control unit supports and which it does not.
So, if you are supposed to run a function that the respective control unit doesn't actually support, I would start wondering what the purpose of such an "instruction" is.

No, if a basic setting fails because something is not working correctly, it usually won't fix itself. In that case, you need to investigate what the problem is.

Is the question really meant seriously? VCDS usually shows the possible codings! And it does so not with such a general explanation like on most "coding websites," but rather specifically for that particular control unit.

ABS/ESP systems should not be modified for safety reasons, but it's true that coding is rarely required in those areas. Therefore, while it might be necessary to code the braking function via GRA within the ABS/ESP system, it must be absolutely clear that the correct settings are being changed!

Here's another tip on how to spot truly nonsensical content in "coding tutorials":

If a document states to modify function X in control unit Y by setting bit 5 of byte 3 to 1, without explaining which function is being activated or deactivated and what byte 3 actually controls, then one would have to be quite naive to do so.

Make only changes that you understand.

However, this specific encoding or relationship is consistently described in multiple sources that are not exclusively aimed at children.

Edit: After reviewing my documents again, I had an idea: the manual describes an ABS/ESP control unit, and it's also labeled as "ABS/ESP front" in the VCDS Screenshot in the manual. However, for the vehicle I worked on today, the control unit was labeled "ESP8 FRONT."

Since the coding must be done in the ABS module, it's possible that both modules are separate in this model, and I need to select the ABS module specifically, rather than the braking module.
Since it fit the instructions so well, I didn't look for any other solutions.

The car manufacturer knows this, who else would? You can ask all sorts of people, but based on my example regarding the issue of liability, I highly doubt you'll find anyone willing to take responsibility for that.

The constant need to go directly to the manufacturer would render forums like these obsolete; that's precisely why they exist in the first place.

With the right instructions (including http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Audi_A4_(8E)_Brake_Electronics_(Bosch_8.0)), the necessary programming of the ESP module also worked out.
However, the error memory was only cleared after turning off the ignition and restarting it, at which point the ESP light went out – this wasn't mentioned in the wiki.

My main mistake regarding the GRA (Gasoline Residue Analyzer) was that I hadn't registered it in the engine control unit. Using the appropriate login credentials (Engine Control Unit, Function 11, Login 11463), you can register the GRA there.

Perhaps this will help someone else who also wants to code for the 8E GRA and FIS.

I understand your reservations, Rainer.
But ultimately, experience is what prevents you from making certain mistakes, and no one becomes a master overnight. For me, it was the first time I was coding a GRA/FIS, and that lack of experience showed.

As long as you approach things with respect (as you mentioned, using a "Rübe" - a term for being gentle and patient) and don't just blindly force things when they don't work out the way you want, you will eventually reach a result.
