Audi A6 4F Allroad: ESP cannot be deactivated

Hi there,

I went to the TÜV (technical inspection) today... The inspector wanted to turn off the ESP (Electronic Stability Program), but he couldn't. He tried pressing the button for a long time, then briefly, turning the ignition on and off, and repeating the process several times... it didn't work. The light for ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation) comes on briefly when you press the button, but immediately turns off again. There is no message in the instrument cluster indicating that ASR or ESP is off.
According to the operating instructions, you need to press and hold the button for a longer time to turn off ESP. A short press allows you to switch ASR on or off.

I bought the car in April. I believe it was working then, but I never actually needed to use that feature.
Since then, the only suspicious issues have been various reports of coding problems related to the AHK control unit, specifically a known error code J345 indicating intermittent communication failures.

It appears to be equipped with a Jaeger electrical wiring harness. In the Gateway 19 module, option 69 (AHK - trailer hitch) is selected. Similarly, both the AAS (Adaptive Air Suspension) and ESP (Electronic Stability Program) control units have "AHK" registered in their configurations.

I tried to clear the errors months ago, but they keep reappearing. The AHK (Auxiliary Heating System) also works, and when I plug in the bike rack, the car recognizes it, turns off the parking sensors, and the lights function as they should.

Now I'm always reading that for other people, the error messages and the retrofitted AHK (Auxiliary Heating Control) have cleared errors in the STG 69 control unit, and further settings are still possible. However, I've never been able to access the STG 69. Somewhere it was stated that it's not diagnosable, so I haven't tried any further troubleshooting. Despite the error messages, everything has been working fine so far.

Okay, so today I tried all sorts of things again. I enabled and disabled the cruise control, and encoded/decoded the trailer hitch... The coding is now back to how it was when I bought the car, and I have an old Autoscan for comparison. The ESP button also shows up correctly in the diagnostic data as pressed and unpressed.

So far so good, but the ESP (Electronic Stability Program) remains active, and the light turns off immediately without any warning message!

Does anyone have any ideas? Is there possibly something wrong electrically?

Is there a way to see in the ESP control unit whether ASR/ESP is active or why it's being reactivated? Could it be that the instrument cluster (IC) isn't displaying this information correctly?

Is it relevant for the vehicle's technical inspection (HU) that the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) cannot be deactivated?

The technical inspection (HU) was not passed, but the main reason for this was a torn rubber joint on the control arm.

If ESP were not working, that would probably be a reason for failing the test. In my case, it's actually safer for traffic if ESP is functioning, so we can definitely talk about that .

It's still strange that I can't disable it. You might actually need it in the snow sometimes...

Frankly, I have never heard of a mechanic trying to disable the ESP.
Why would that be the case? And why should the ability to disable the ESP be relevant for the TÜV (technical inspection)? After all, there are plenty of cars where it's not possible to disable it.

Perhaps the inspector wanted to see if the ESP light was working because he didn't pay attention to it when starting the engine.

When the car is started, the ASR/ESP light illuminates briefly and then turns off.
Okay, as it should be, if there's no critical error in the system, like a faulty ABS wheel speed sensor or something else, then the light wouldn't stay on permanently; that's correct.

"This is also always checked by the TÜV (German technical inspection agency), at least that's my experience. I've never seen anyone try to turn it off before, but apparently, this particular inspector had it listed as a check point in his PC protocol."

The inspector tested it multiple times, even restarting the ignition, etc. The issue is listed as a defect alongside the stabilizer bar mounts (upper inner joint) on both the left and right sides. I will replace those soon and go back for another inspection. Hopefully, the ESP issue will resolve itself by then, or perhaps it won't bother him enough to cause me to fail the inspection. At least, since it involves the ESP, it's on the safe side. If the ESP stopped working, that would be a good reason to fail the inspection.

I compared it to my own code.
Revert everything back to the original settings, especially the AAS (Advanced Adaptive System) and the braking electronics. Just because you can select an option for a trailer hitch doesn't mean it's necessarily correct. The individual control units are also installed in other vehicle models that might need them, but not in your case.

The trailer hitch is only active in the PDC (Parking Distance Control) and the central electrical system. I had a similar problem with a Passat from 2008; it also had the trailer hitch coded everywhere, resulting in non-erasable errors and "Christmas lights" on the dashboard. Then, I copied the AHK coding from another Passat, and it worked fine. It was only coded into the body control module (BCM), as that module only needs to know that there's a trailer with its own lights, turn signals, and brake light.With PDC, there's still the issue of deactivation when operating in AHK mode; everything else remains standard .
The error in the gateway persists because the accessory control unit cannot be accessed.

If a defect is listed in the inspection report, whether it's marked as "EM" (minor) or "GM" (major), it must be rectified before the follow-up inspection. In other words, all defects identified in the vehicle inspection report must be addressed to receive the official sticker.

Whether it's a practical exam or a re-examination, the outcome should ideally make a difference.
If, despite the minor defect, the inspection sticker is still refused, I would simply have the vehicle inspected elsewhere.

But not with the same inspection organization; there, the vehicle inspection report is stored in the system for the next 2 years.

That means you didn't create a data backup before your experiments, or you didn't write down the original code.

That's not good.
Just because the control unit accepts the coding doesn't mean it will necessarily work harmoniously with the other control units.

Regarding my coding, it won't help you because the Allroad has a different factory coding.
You first need to address all the existing open issues and defects. This also affects the MSTG (presumably a specific standard or regulation), as the readiness check was not passed. In our case, this would prevent us from getting the required certification.

Of course, I made a data backup before starting my experiments.
I saved the complete car scan, including all errors and coding data, when I bought it, and I'm using it now for comparison.
The AHK (presumably a vehicle component) was retrofitted by the previous owner. I don't know exactly what changes they made or whether everything was done correctly.
I mean that disabling ESP worked back then, and if the coding is the same now as it was then, I probably have a different problem with the system.

On our brake testing machine, any existing traction control system (ASR) must be deactivated before the test run (as specified by the manufacturer of the testing equipment). Some vehicles disable the ASR using the "ESP off" button.

Of course, it's annoying if it can't be turned off. In this case, the inspector might consider the brake test to be impossible to perform and either cancel the inspection or deem it a failure.

During a vehicle inspection (HU), it was noted that my "Auto-Hold" button wasn't working. The inspector's comment: "Auto-Hold is standard equipment on vehicles with DSG transmissions and is part of the braking system. If it doesn't function, this constitutes a defect in the braking system, and the inspection will be considered failed."

I suspect the situation is similar with the ESP button.

PS: I didn't verify whether my examiner was correct. I managed to find another button for about €15 and was glad it was such a small item.
