Replacing the Xenon projectors D2S - Conversion to proper light

Yesterday, I took a small step in that direction. I purchased and installed Evo XR 1.0 projectors from retrofitlabs.com. It went quite well. There was also the Evo XR 2.0 version available at the same price. They were supposed to produce even more light, but there were some uncertainties regarding compatibility.

The installation went quite well. I didn't have to drill, file, or anything like that. The cover for opening and closing works, and so does the LWR. And the lenses fit perfectly into the designated hole in the headlight, not 5mm behind it. (That would have been the case with the 2.0 versions because they are shorter.)

The initial configuration consisted of the following:
- Osram Nightbreaker Unlimited D2S and Osram Nightbreaker Laser H7 for the high beam.
- The reflectors were in excellent condition. (They are original, but not high-gloss chrome, but only matte)
- The headlight lenses were also in excellent condition. Nothing was yellowed or the like.
- Lens clean
- New Hella headlight units.

The subjective feeling of the light could be described as "okay" or "decent". The high beam was already quite good.

-Aharon Evo XR 1.0 Bi Xenon Projectors (with nicely chrome-plated reflectors and other lenses)
-Philips Xtreme Vision Gen2 D2s +150%
-Philips Racing H7 +150% additionally for long-distance lighting.

Subjective impression after modification: wide smile. Or 300% more light. Felt naturally. +1

Regarding the light bulbs, I have stuck to the side that complies with traffic regulations. However, I have chosen the models with the highest output currently available. I have previously had rather unsatisfactory experiences with the xtreme Vision1 D2S and, before that, with the Philips Ultra Blue D2S. That's why I tried Osram last year.

Now, I have decided to go back to Philips.

Reason: If you compare the two reflectors, it becomes clear that it is pointless to compare light bulbs based on the stated percentage of additional light output. Or to read reviews of these light bulbs on the websites of retailers.

With the matte reflector, nothing changes, and you can also put an Osram Blue Cool in the chrome ones, and the illumination in the rain is likely still brilliant.

What I mean is, it's not always just about the bulb, but also about other factors, such as the projector. And the ones I removed are still in very good condition. There are also some that are completely matte, discolored, and rusted, etc. You can then put in terrifying 8500k bulbs and still see nothing.

But why orange turn signals and not silver ones?

Because tastes differ.
The oranges fulfill their purpose.

Of course, they also light up. But if you're already working with light...

When I'm driving at night and see a bright light, I'm more likely to assume it's a car. But when I see silver flashing lights, I'm less likely to assume it's a car.

I know you're interested in experiments with light. Maybe you'll take a look here. They also have the aforementioned turn signal bulbs in LED versions. For me personally, that wouldn't be a problem. The price is also a factor. But, as I said, everyone has their own preferences and hobbies. And looking is free.

So far, I haven't had anything in my hands that would be suitable for replacing the turn signals and brake lights – something that could provide sufficient brightness. In my friend's circle, we have two VW T5.2 vehicles equipped with LED daytime running lights and LED reversing lights. The latter are a real advantage. Both T5 drivers are anglers, and they can see very well with the current brightness of the reversing lights.

I've also equipped my Smart and my Swift with it. Both only have one reversing light, and the one on the Smart didn't provide much illumination. While the one on the Swift provided more light, it was located deep in the rear bumper and therefore had very limited range. Now, both are suitable for their purpose thanks to the LED lights; at least you can see something. In the case of the T5.2 models, the rear lights have even become incredibly bright.

I also prefer bright headlights for my car.

When I look at the two photos for illuminating the road and surroundings, I prefer the top (original) lighting. It is more even and extends further, even in the distance. The bottom option has very bright spotlights directly in front of the car, which probably disturb your vision more than they help to illuminate things lying or walking just in front of the car.

Tomorrow I'll re-adjust the settings because I had removed them, and then I'd like to take some more photos.
However, compared to before, there's still a big difference. Let's see how it looks in the rain.

Hey everyone, I have a small update. After I finished the renovation, Osram came with the new Nightbreaker Laser D2S. As you know, I couldn't resist and I rebuilt and adjusted the headlights again. Specifically, the low beam light improved significantly. The illumination is no longer patchy but nice and even. If the question ever arises again, which bulb is currently number 1 on the market, then my answer is clear. I'm very satisfied.

Hey everyone, I've got all the materials for the next upgrade. Soon, I'll be installing Morimoto projectors with 50W power instead of the usual 35W, as well as the new Osram Brennner D2S Cool Blue Boost bulbs. They're also known as "The CBB" in enthusiast circles. :D

I'm really excited to see what the results will be. Hopefully, the high power won't affect the light color.

Of course, the Brenners won't reach biblical ages anymore. But since well-known premium brands are regularly launching new super-burners, I don't need them anyway until they burn out: -)

Projectors have already been replaced. The EVO XR are supposed to handle the heat quite well.
Maybe I'll build it this Saturday.

Everything is installed. The English word "bright" came to mind immediately when I switched on the light.
The light color is a brilliant white. This is certainly due to the 50W control units. The CBB would have had a slight blue tint with 35W.
The pictures say it all. No mouse can hide anymore. Even though it wasn't really dark at the time of the photos. I really like it.
