It should be like that. However, this has nothing to do with factory or aftermarket installation, but rather with the control unit of the trailer hitch.
On my 2005 A4 B7, I had a Westfalia hitch installed afterwards. It supported the function you're looking for. Viele Grüße

Problem erkannt! Die Kennzeichenbeleuchtung hat ebenfalls 5W und hängt parallel zur Rückleuchte. Da merkt das Steuergerät und der A3 nix davon, wenn eine der beiden ausfällt. TolThe sausage.
