If you look at MWB 6 or 10, it can detect the accelerator pedal position (even when in emergency mode).

With the newer Sharans, there's a TPI that allows you to swap the contacts.

If the other fault with the coolant temperature sensor occurred promptly, I would rather suspect chafing of the wiring harness to the engine control unit.
