According to the date/time, I should have started the car there and then, and I should have been able to drive normally (without problems). The return trip was also uneventful, as were the subsequent 2-4 engine starts (and 40 km of driving).

Could this happen occasionally, or does it indicate a potentially larger problem that could occur? Specifically, what could be the cause?

I suspect it's the "Engine Cut-Off" message on the CAN bus, which is being incorrectly reported by the engine control unit.
It's likely due to a low battery voltage, with readings of 10.x V in the ambient conditions.

Therefore, and unless anything has been modified on the engine control unit, the dashboard, or the immobilizer, we should wait.
Clear the error and see if it reappears.

"Nothing has been rebuilt" is, of course, relative. There is other software installed and different spark plugs, but everything has been "forever," without the MSG ever complaining.

I need to check the battery voltage. However, it could also be that the starter motor drained the battery during starting.
