Error code P0101, faulty mass airflow sensor (VAG): Causes and diagnosis.

P0101 is one of the most common error codes in modern engines and affects both TDI and TSI/TFSI engines. The mass airflow sensor (MAF sensor, G70) is providing implausible values – either too high or too low. The engine control unit (ECU) detects this by comparing the readings with other sensors (intake manifold pressure, throttle position, engine speed).

What does P0101 mean?
The mass airflow sensor measures the amount of air being drawn into the engine. The engine control unit (ECU) compares this value with calculated expected values. If the measured value deviates significantly from the plausibility range, a P0101 code is set. This can be caused by a faulty sensor, but also by a vacuum leak (which the MAF sensor does not measure) or a clogged/defective EGR valve.

Typical symptoms:
- Engine check light is on.
- Jerky acceleration.
- Power loss
- Black smoke coming from the exhaust (too rich fuel mixture, because the mass airflow sensor is reporting too much air).
- Increased fuel consumption.
- Engine stalls when idling.
- Emergency mode

Most common causes:
- Mass airflow sensor G70 is dirty or defective (approximately 50% of cases).
- Air leaks after the mass airflow sensor (cracks in intake hoses, loose clamps) - approximately 30%.
- EGR valve is carbonized and stuck open (TDI) - Airflow is too low.
- Air filter is dirty (insufficient airflow).
- Throttle body dirty (TSI).
- Wiring/connector to the mass airflow sensor is corroded/damaged (likely caused by rodent damage!).
- Faulty positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system.
- For a while, there were cheap LLMs circulating that provided inaccurate measurements.

Diagnosis with VCDS:
- Autoscan: P0101 code found in the engine control unit (01 - Engine).
- Measurement block 003 (TDI) or 002 (TSI): Air mass at idle and under load.
- TDI idle emissions: approximately 230-310 mg/H (depending on the engine).
- TSI idle: approximately 2-5 g/s.
- Disconnect the MAF sensor connector: If the engine runs better, the MAF sensor is likely defective.
- Vacuum leak test using brake cleaner around the intake manifold.
