P2453 refers to the differential pressure sensor of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and occurs in many TDI engines equipped with a DPF. The code is set when the sensor signal is implausible or outside the expected operating range. This does not automatically indicate a faulty sensor or a clogged filter.
What does P2453 mean?
The differential pressure sensor measures the pressure difference before and after the diesel particulate filter. Based on this value, the control unit calculates the loading status (soot and ash mass) and controls the regeneration process. If the signal is outside the plausibility range (e.g., a value significantly above 0 mbar when the ignition is on), the error code P2453 is set. Common causes, in addition to the sensor itself, include clogged or leaking pressure lines.
Typical symptoms:
- Engine check light is on.
- Frequent or interrupted DPF regeneration.
- Power loss / Emergency mode
- Often combined with P2002 (DPF efficiency too low) or P2463 (excessive soot mass).
Most common causes:
- Differential pressure sensor failure.
- Druckschläuche/-leitungen zum Sensor verstopft, geknickt, vertauscht oder undicht
- Loose connection in the cable (due to rodent damage or chafing) / corroded connector.
- DPF actually overloaded/clogged.
- Defective regeneration cycle.
Diagnosis with VCDS:

Autoscan: P2453 in the engine control unit (01 - Engine).
- Measurement value for differential pressure during ignition (engine off): should be close to 0 mbar.

Observe the DPF differential pressure at idle and under load (it increases with load).
- Check the sensor and pressure lines for blockages, kinks, and leaks.
- Before sensor replacement: Check the soot mass and ash mass in the measurement block. If the
DPF is full of ash, clean it.
