Hello everyone,

Is there a way to determine the phase difference between the crankshaft and camshaft within an EDC17 control unit?

Similar to what is described here for a 4-cylinder engine, there is a synchronization angle.

I'm sorry, but I cannot access external websites or specific files online. Therefore, I am unable to translate the text from the provided URL.

What can be done on a V6 TDI engine without having to access the timing chain system, remove the cylinder head cover, or disassemble the common rail injectors?

After searching for a while, I unfortunately couldn't find anything relevant in this forum.

Quickly: I know that for the V(R)6 gasoline engine, there are diagnostic data blocks where you can identify this. It might be helpful.

Hello,

bei den erweiterten Messwerten im Motorsteuergerät schon nach *sync* oder *versatz* gesucht? Autoscan?

Best regards, Rainer.

Hello,

In the 2.5 V6 TDI engine, it can be checked via control module 4 (module word byte 4).
For example, in a VR6 engine like the R36 gasoline engine, it can be checked using control modules (ECUs) 208 and 209.

However, these features are not available in the EDC17 system because it only has extended diagnostic data.
In the advanced settings, you won't find any options labeled "sync" or "offset." There are only initial synchronization values, but they have nothing to do with those terms.

I can't imagine that it's impossible to check this indirectly via VCDS specifically for the 3-liter TDI engines.
Therefore, the question remains: does anyone have any advice?

Hello,

Have you already looked for extended measurement values in the engine control unit, specifically searching for terms like "*sync*" or "*offset*"? Autoscan?

Best regards, Rainer

Hello,

As Rainer already mentioned in the quote, an automatic scan would be very helpful. EDC17 covers a wide range of possibilities, as it only indicates the generation of the engine control unit (ECU), but there are still some hardware differences, different pin assignments, and various software versions.
The answers here will be more accurate the more precise the information provided.

The first two generations of the CR-V6-TDI engines monitor the camshaft (KW) position with 100% accuracy, even from the moment the engine starts.
If one of the timing chains skips a tooth or is excessively stretched, the corresponding crankshaft sensor for the affected cylinder bank will register a static error and immediately shut down the engine.
I know that from experience icon_wink.gif.
However, the engine codes differ from generation to generation and between the 2.7 and 3.0 TDI engines.
Even in the older vehicle databases, these should be findable starting with the model year 2010 (from 09/2009), so please provide more data; perhaps someone can help you icon_idea.gif.

Regards, Mpire.

Thanks @mpire, I also have that information, but I haven't been able to find any other information anywhere, and I haven't received an answer from a workshop either.

Here's the message from the Autoscan again. (It was already mentioned in another thread, which is why I didn't think it would be necessary to include it again icon_wink.gif).

Hello.

I'm getting a 2010 Touareg with a 3.0 TDI engine for an inspection next week, and I'll take a look at the EDC system while I'm there. Maybe I can tell you something then.

Hello...

..it took some time, but now it's finally here icon_wink.gif.

I have read out the extended module work base (MWB) from two vehicles: a 2010 Touareg 3.0 TDI and a 2014 A6 4G 3.0 TDI, both with EDC17 engine control units.

For both, under "Camshaft flank position" at IDE04..., the deviation from the crankshaft is listed as X.00°.
Warning!
- When only the ignition is turned on, the manifold vacuum gauge always reads 0.00°.
- The deviation can only be displayed when the engine is running.

The quality of the crankshaft position (KW) signal and the status test of the crankshaft sensor can also be found in the block area IDE04.

-> It's located quite low down on the list, after all the exhaust treatment values.

Regards, Mpire.

Okay, here's the translation:

"Very good, thank you very much."

The search for "crankshaft" and "camshaft" yields the corresponding results.

Only this flank position consistently shows a suspicious value of 0.0 degrees.

The phase lag value on the intake side, bank 1, seems more like a value that allows you to infer information about the valve timing. It's currently around -2 degrees.
So, the timing is off by 2 degrees too early?!

Normal? Please provide the Screenshot so I can translate the text for you.
Also, what do the other values mean? (excluding crankshaft and camshaft speed icon_lol.gif).
The crankshaft quality signal is likely the value output by sensor 7. However, what does this value represent? According to the description, it's an unsigned byte.
