07-05-2024, 18:36 Subject: 1.4 TSI timing belt valve timing adjustment |

Hello.
For my VW Golf 7 1.4 TSI with engine code CZCA, which has a power output of 92 kW.
The timing needs to be readjusted because the timing belt must have skipped a tooth. The ribbed belt broke while driving. Fortunately, there was no engine damage, and the engine is still running, but the EPC light is now coming on intermittently. The error memory confirms my suspicion. Error code 4096 indicates a problem with the camshaft position sensor (G40) / crankshaft position sensor (G28) on bank 1.
P001600: Incorrect mapping.
"There must be something wrong with the valve timing, right? I'm going to rotate the engine to Top Dead Center (TDC) and then check if the valve timing is still correct."
What I'm curious about now is: If the valve timing is incorrect due to issues with the intake or exhaust camshafts, how are they realigned? The crankshaft is usually blocked at the bottom with a screw, which presses against the crankshaft flange. I assume I can't use the usual tools to lock the camshafts anymore since the timing is off. Can the camshaft sprockets be loosened so that they can be repositioned to the Top Dead Center (TDC) position?I'd really like to know how to readjust the valve timing (the procedure).
It would be great if someone could explain to me how to do it.
Thank you for the information.
Best regards, Snaker.

Thank you for your contribution.
The valve timing is now correctly adjusted, and the engine is running great.

Hello Snaker,
The fault P001600 indicates an incorrect correlation between the crankshaft and camshaft. This can be caused by misaligned timing, but does not necessarily mean that the timing belt has jumped.
Since the serpentine belt tore during driving, I would first check whether belt remnants have entered the timing belt drive.
The timing should be checked using the appropriate special tools for the CZCA engine according to manufacturer specifications.
If the timing is incorrect, the crankshaft and camshafts must be correctly positioned and the timing belt drive re-adjusted.
The camshaft sprockets must not simply be loosened on suspicion. The exact manufacturer specification is crucial, especially for the camshaft adjusters, the belt tension, and the bolts.
After adjustment, first turn the engine over by hand and check the timing again before starting it.
I would avoid running the engine further until this is clarified, as incorrect timing can cause valve damage.
Regards,
