P00AF indicates that the actuator for turbocharger 1 is stuck. In TDI engines, the most common cause is often not the turbocharger itself, but rather an incorrect connection or a stuck variable geometry turbine (VGT) actuator. However, soot/rust on the VGT guide vanes is also a frequent cause. This code is closely related to P2563.

What does P00AF mean?
The control unit expects movement from the VTG actuator. If it is jammed or the feedback from the G581 sensor is incorrect, code P00AF will be set.

Typical symptoms:
- Engine control light on (MIL).
- Spark plug lamp is flashing.
- Reduced engine power.

Most common causes:
- N75 valve defective.
- N75 connector connected to the wrong 2-wire component (often confused with the N79, which is the PCV heater element).
- Vacuum leak or insufficient vacuum.
- VTG jammed or stuck.
- G581 defective.

Diagnosis with VCDS:
- Autoscan: P00AF code detected in the engine control unit (01 - Engine).
- Check N75 using actuator diagnosis.
- Check the N75 connector against the manufacturer's specifications (N79 does not set an error code).
- Check vacuum lines, measure vacuum at idle.
- Check VNT and G581: Apply vacuum to the VGT and monitor control module 120.4.

Special note:
MWB 120.4 - Engine off, no vacuum: approximately 3.5 V. Engine off, full vacuum: approximately 0.7 V. Engine idling: approximately 0.7 V. If the voltage in 120.4 does not change, the VGT is likely stuck or the G581 sensor is defective. In some TDI engines, the vacuum membrane/G581 block is available as a separate part from the dealer.
