27-11-2003, 19:13 Subject: Chip Tuning Golf IV TDI ALH: No Clutch Upgrade? |

A few days ago, I posted a report 'Clutch slipping after chip tuning to 90PS ALH!' here. Most recommendations pointed towards a reinforced clutch, preferably a 'Powerclutch' from Sachs. But the problem seems unsolvable. I contacted someone who works in the automotive parts business. He tried to get a reinforced clutch from Sachs. He even called the racing department at Sachs. All to no avail. Apparently, there is nothing like that for the ALH engine; if there is, it's only a racing clutch with a larger diameter, which would require a larger dual-mass flywheel (DMS), which even they don't recommend for a daily driver car because it would be rather uncomfortable. Does anyone else have a tip, or know someone who managed to get a reinforced clutch from somewhere? The standard clutch can only handle 250Nm in the long run, so it's a bit overwhelmed and doesn't last very long ...

Please find the Hennig GmbH in Essen. Contact person: Mr. Claus.
They sell spare parts. It's clear that Sachs Racing doesn't offer anything for the ALH...
And there's something similar for the ALH, I've experienced it myself. Don't panic!

Hi Chrissi,
Are you sure it's the clutch?
We recently had a problem with my brother's Golf 4, the 90 HP version.
welcher einen sehr bösen Chip bekommen hat, (nun 210 lt. Sure, here's the translation:
'Tacho) that the'
The clutch was also slipping, especially in 3rd and 5th gear. We also had the same suspicion as you do.
However, when dismantling the old ones, it turned out that one bearing was defective.
'some oil somehow entered the clutch area, causing it to slip.'
'It caused this issue. It wasn't noticeable before the chip, and it seemed great, but with the chip, it was just...'
Too much torque.
Regards,
arne

Hello Arne,
Yes, I am 99% sure that the problem lies with the clutch . This is the second one that has failed within 40,000 km. The same problem occurred with the first clutch that was replaced, even though absolutely nothing could be detected after it was removed. No oil contamination, no visible wear, no smell, or anything else. I am certain that it is the same problem again. 250 Nm is simply too low for this tuned engine, for which it was designed.
