I have the opportunity to acquire a 150 horsepower TDI engine and transmission from a Volkswagen Golf 4.
That's why I was wondering if it could be installed in a Volkswagen Golf Mk3 (I'm not very good at doing repairs myself, but I have some friends who are).
Is that possible?
Does the Volkswagen Golf 3 have to be a diesel, or can it also run with a gasoline engine after a thorough cleaning of the fuel tank and hoses?
Furthermore, I can obtain a complete climate control system with the engine and transmission.
I would be grateful for your help or expertise!

We're moving on to a more advanced topic now, and it remains to be seen whether you can grasp it, especially since you mentioned that you don't have much experience with mechanical work.
Simply flushing the fuel tank isn't enough. The G4 has completely different engine mounts, electronics, and electrical systems, as well as different axles, and even the air conditioning unit is not directly interchangeable. The conversion is certainly possible, but it requires knowledge, time, and likely some financial investment.
What kind of deal did you get?

It's not that easy to install an engine from a Golf 4 into a Golf 3. If you absolutely want a powerful TDI, then consider installing an AFN engine with a chip and a large intercooler, or something similar. But I would advise against using a PD engine.
Have you noticed that the 115 hp PD engines are cheaper than the AFN engines? This might be because it's no longer as easy to fit those newer PD engines into other cars or vans.
I'm not saying it's impossible... but it's going to be extremely expensive and complicated.
I'm sorry for potentially discouraging you. But it's better to know now than when you're in the middle of a renovation.

Price was €2500 (from scrapped cars) for the engine and 6-speed transmission from a Golf 4. For the same price, you could get a 1.8 Turbo engine with a 5-speed transmission!
Is the AFN engine the one without a pump nozzle system?
'It's definitely noisy when it's idling, but oh well...'
'Chip is definitely going to be included, what's an LLK?'
'How many horsepower would it have then, and what would a good chip tuning and downpipe cost?'
FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES:
I will not be doing any renovations myself, but some factory workers (friends) will be there, and I will just be helping them with something .

Hi Holy,
The AFN engine is a 110 horsepower TDI with a distributor injection pump.
LLK stands for "Ladeluftkühler," which is, well, a device used to cool the intake air.
Colder air contains more oxygen than warm air, and so on...
Chips usually cost around 500 euros, but it's more likely to be higher if you're going to...
If you're going with a well-known tuner, the auxiliary cooling system (LLK) will cost just as much, and its price depends on its size and where it needs to be installed (e.g., in the wheel arch or in front of the water cooler). You can find used LLKs at affordable prices on eBay. However, you should ask your friends whether a particular model will fit. Unfortunately, I don't know how this affects the TÜV (German technical inspection) requirements.
Zur Leistung. Viele Tuner geben Werte bis 150 PS an. For example, AH-tuning.
It probably works on their test bench, but whether that's really accurate remains to be seen. I think around 130-140 horsepower is likely the most common figure (if it's even correct). Without extensive hardware modifications, you're more likely to damage the engine if you try to get significantly more power out of it.
Greetings,
Thomas. -----------------------------------------------------

'Actually, a score between 130 and 140 is also acceptable...'
What about power consumption and noise levels?
My friend has a G4 with 110 horsepower, and his is also an AFN; that thing makes quite a bit of noise!

What does it say about AH-Tuning there?
Feature: Original chip after chip tuning (approximate values).
Power: 83 kW / 113 hp or 103 kW / 140 hp.
Torque: 150 Nm at 3600 rpm. Torque: 180 Nm at 3600 rpm.
Power transmission: front-wheel drive. Five-speed manual gearbox.
Top speed: 196 km/h, 205 km/h.
Fuel consumption at 90 km/h: 5.6 l/100 km, 5.5 l/100 km.
Fuel consumption at 120 km/h: 7.5 l/100 km, 7.4 l/100 km.
Fuel consumption: City driving - 8.9 l/100 km, 8.8 l/100 km.
'Statzyklus' - 9 liters?
My brother would be thrilled if it were only 9 liters.
'Reached a top speed of 196 km/h on the way home from Hamburg!'

Hi,
AH-Tuning was just an example. For instance, they claim to offer 148 horsepower for the AFN engine with just a chip tuning upgrade. I honestly can't imagine that's true.
Several magazine reviews have already demonstrated that tuners often like to push the numbers up just a little bit.
Unfortunately, I don't have any personal experience with chip tuning, only with a device from Wendland. According to the MFA (Multi Function Display), fuel consumption has decreased by almost a liter with roughly the same driving style. When accelerating at full throttle, the fuel consumption is slightly higher than before, and it can sometimes reach 7 liters.
Regarding the noise level of the car, I can't tell you anything about that. I drive around without any plastic covers in the engine compartment, without soundproofing materials (like bitumen or sand), and without any other devices designed to reduce noise. The exhaust system remains completely stock.
However, I also didn't notice any acoustic changes between the tuned and untuned states.
Greetings,
Thomas. -----------------------------------------------------

Hmm, what exactly is the difference between a chip and a box?
What modifications can be made to a diesel engine to increase its performance?
'I heard that stainless steel exhausts don't sound very good, right?'
Are there similar products available for gasoline engines as well?
Power pipe, etc.?

Hello,
You can find information about the difference between a chip and a box on this page. There's even a dedicated article about it (which, in my opinion, is excellent). It wonderfully explains the advantages, disadvantages, and differences.
Furthermore, anything that goes beyond a simple chip or box will become extremely expensive.
Items like power pipes don't have TÜV approval because they cause the catalytic converter or muffler to fail. Furthermore, they are not environmentally friendly.
It's also not good for the ears. While it's sometimes said that the car doesn't get any louder, I can't imagine that being true.
Typical gasoline engine tuning usually involves modifications that are not applicable to TDI engines. They are fundamentally different systems.

Thomas. -----------------------------------------------------

Is the 110 hp engine the most powerful one without a particulate filter (PD), or are there other alternatives available?

Is the 110 hp engine the most powerful one without a turbocharger?
The 110 hp TDI was the most powerful non-PD engine offered in the Golf.
The 5-cylinder 2.5 TDI engine from the van (150 hp) would be even more powerful, but it wouldn't fit .
Best regards, Mampf.

Okay, I'm starting to need to decide between a 110hp TDI or a 1.8T with 150hp.
Can you tell me your opinion about it?
What would you choose?
The TDI engine is appealing because of its low fuel consumption, while the 1.8T offers horsepower and a distinctive sound.

Hi,
"So, I would always choose the TDI."
It's not just the consumption, but also the torque.
If you then "chip" the TDI engine, you'll definitely leave the 1.8T behind.
Maximum speed probably not, but the torque says it all.
With a 110 horsepower TDI engine, you can keep up with a VR6 in certain situations.
You only really notice how quickly it pulls away from you when you're driving above 80-100 km/h.
PS are not everything. What's important is at what RPM a motor delivers its power. If you've ever driven a V5 20V, you know what I mean.
If you value sound quality, then the 1.8T is probably the more "pleasant" choice.
Personally, I think the sound of a diesel engine is just part of the experience.
What would a diesel engine be like if it didn't make that knocking sound? Wouldn't that be strange?
Furthermore, the 1.8T engine likely has more tuning potential. So, depending on what you're planning to do, you can (with the necessary investment) ...
squeeze significantly more performance out of the 1.8T engine.
(e.g., this 300 horsepower Lupo that was featured in Auto Bild recently ).

Do you happen to know the approximate fuel consumption of a 110hp TDI and a 1.8T engine (both untuned)?
I heard that the fuel consumption is approximately: 5 liters at 80 km/h, 5.5 liters at 120 km/h, and 6 liters in the city.
