Hello everyone,
This here made me a little suspicious, regarding future "transparent chip tuning".
Does anyone here know what the hard facts are behind this?
(And please don't stone me for the fact that one has to painstakingly piece together the important statements or claims in the Ibiza forum, unlike here... but the topic seems too interesting to ignore ). Gruß Ulf

Hi Ulf,
Yes, the EU makes it possible...
The EU4 standard requires OBD2 compliance. OBD2 mandates that the vehicle's VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) must be readable, the software within the ECUs (Electronic Control Units) must be identifiable based on key numbers, and the vehicle's emission values must be checked on-site.
Law enforcement agencies should be provided with better tools for vehicle inspections.
You're going to be very impressed... my AXR only has "D4" because mine doesn't have OBD2.
Actually, I was under the impression that this regulation would only come into effect on January 1, 2005. Gruß Bertil

Hi Ulf!
I've read about that before, I need to find the link. We were alerted to it by the last importer of those beetles. (I don't want any beetles!).
Our company was looking for a promotional vehicle, and I thought that a "Beetle" (or "Vocho," as the Mexicans say), specifically the ultimate edition (meaning the last edition, the one with whitewall tires), would perfectly match our product concept. It also happened that he owned five of them, but he couldn't register them normally because they lack an on-board diagnostics system... I mean, what exactly are they supposed to be checking on a Beetle anyway?
Okay, so we have a new convertible Beetle, which really doesn't suit me at all... but that's a problem if the boss is a woman... By the way, the Beetle is almost pink... and I've already had to drive it!

Excuse me, but it's questionable where the original poster sourced their car's parts. Some foreign-made VW/Audi vehicles already had OBD2-compatible mass airflow sensors (MAF) and thus EGR monitoring, even under Euro3 standards, and that was as early as mid-2003.
In Germany, this will likely only be a matter for the insurance companies. They can quickly check what the MSG unit 'contained' after an accident. However, skilled tuners can circumvent this, and the engine control unit (ECU) numbers will remain unchanged.
If you now, for example, read an ***-MSG, it is clear with any standard tester that something has been tampered with. Many other tuners are also susceptible to this. So, what is the innovation supposed to be here?
Okay, bitte gib mir den deutschen Text, den du übersetzt haben möchtest.

Hi Julian,
Perhaps it's because, in the future, " Big Brother" might be able to look into our MSG (Main System Gateway) via OBD (On-Board Diagnostics).
If the police scenario from the Ibiza forum were to become a reality someday, I think it would be funny.
If the first few OBD-tuned cars that were modified without registration were seized, the scene will likely resort to soldering a hidden switch into the data line leading to the engine control unit.
Then, during inspections, mechanics will have to guess why the engine computer isn't responding, and the police will look just as clueless as some VAGCOM users do.
The driver, of course, knows nothing and might be advised to have it checked at a workshop.
If a later inspection of the vehicle by the police were to be ordered, then of course (again) the normal software would be installed, and the hidden switch in the data line would be closed -> everything would be fine... Gruß Ulf

'This might be possible, but I think it's unlikely. If a vehicle is suspected of something, it will be impounded like it is today and taken to the technical inspection center, where it will be put through a thorough inspection.'
But it might not matter much to the police, except in the case of an insurance claim, which is when it becomes interesting and important, because insurance companies are often very reluctant to pay out claims.

Who actually pays for the performance measurement in such a case?
Could someone possibly tell me where I can get such a measurement done near Soltau?
How much does it cost?

The current OBD-II system isn't quite like that! It displays all sorts of things, for example, data from the fuel injection system and lambda sensors. This only relates to emissions. I must also say that I haven't read the thread. But with the current state of things, I don't think the members of the Grün-Weiß hunting club will be able to figure it out! However, development is ongoing, and therefore, if tuners want to continue generating revenue, they will also have a responsibility to adapt. OBD-II looks more powerful than it actually is! In my Passat, which was supposedly OBD-II compatible, you can only extract four values: coolant temperature, RPM, load, and speed.
I've also heard of cases where gasoline cars failed the emissions test! The testing device had a bug and displayed a coolant temperature of 835 degrees! The technicians were quite surprised!
