Hi,
'Today I wanted to install my Koch Powerbox. This device plugs into the pump connector, and when active, it needs power from the battery. I initially just plugged in the connector with the box installed, but left the box in the engine compartment without connecting it to the battery. Normally, I should be able to drive normally in this state. However, the car wouldn't start! I removed the connector and the box and then started the engine, which ran perfectly. Now, though, the glow plug light is flashing, and the engine diagnostic lamp is on.'Bitte gib mir den deutschen Text, den du übersetzt haben möchtest.
'...I'm just wondering why??? Chiptronic told me that the light might be on if the device is set too aggressively, but the device wasn't even active yet (it wasn't connected to the battery)!!!'
Bitte gib mir den deutschen Text, den du übersetzt haben möchtest.
...Do these lights turn off on their own, or do I need to have the error memory cleared?

It seems your device isn't passing through signals when it's in a power-off state.

It's clear that your device isn't passing the original signal when it's not powered on, which is why your engine isn't starting and there's likely an error stored in the engine control unit. You should be able to figure out the rest yourself now! Okay?

I just called Koch again, and you're right, the signals are not being passed through! It is absolutely necessary that the device remains permanently connected to the battery!

It depends on the severity of the error! In your case, it might already be the case!

Hi,
I think so too.
Errors that disappear on their own after 50 starts are likely to be different from those that cause the LEDs not to light up every time the device is turned on, as the latter usually indicates a more serious problem.
Therefore... either pay the tuition fee (i.e., learn from your mistakes), or spend the money on a VAGCOM diagnostic tool -> see the link to the shop.

Hi,
Subject to the consideration of whether experiences with VP engines can be applied to PDs, there might still be hope.
If the RWG (rotor winding generator) is adjusted on the VP 37 in such a way that the sensor voltage values are slightly outside of the tolerance range, the motor will still run, but the heating element will flicker.
If the resistance of the glow plug is adjusted back to the normal range, the heating element will continue to flash for a few more engine starts and eventually stop on its own .
Probably, detected errors at "particularly critical" locations such as the RWG (-> and possibly the PD elements ), will continue to be displayed for a while, even if the error no longer exists. Gruß Ulf

...and now for the kicker.
Yesterday, I properly installed the power box from Koch and also connected it to the battery. I started the engine, and the glow plug warning light stopped blinking, and the engine diagnostic light was off!
.......I took it for a spin, and the car is running really badly; it's constantly jerking and there's no extra power . (The guy at Koch told me that the box fits all 4-cylinder pump nozzles. If they are set too strongly, Koch could adjust them to be weaker, but it's somehow running poorly, I have no idea why; it was previously on a 2000 Golf TDI with 115 horsepower).
'...then I reassembled the box, but then I tried to disable the EGR valve (by disconnecting and sealing the hose).'
'...I drove around for about 10 minutes, and things seemed to be working a little better, but then the engine diagnostic light suddenly came on (is this related to the EGR system?)'
'...I then removed the plug from the hose and connected the hose to the canister. After approximately 5 more start cycles, the engine diagnostic light turned off and has remained off ever since!'
...Has the cycle time for error clearing become shorter? (Tried 5 times)
...why is the car running so poorly with this tuning box? I'm only familiar with issues like 'no power and lots of smoke,' or excessive power, but I haven't encountered a situation where a car simply runs terribly *because* of a tuning box. Could it be defective?
That's the box, by the way.

Even though I might have missed something, where did you get the control unit? It seems like you bought it used, and since you mentioned it was previously installed on a different engine type, that makes me a bit hesitant... Well, I'm just not really into chip tuning.
I also have an ASZ with a "defective" AGR valve, and I assure you that the warning light has never come on for me except during startup. Also, a stored error code is either cleared by turning off the engine or after frequent starting; it definitely won't clear after just 5 starts.

Does your engine have EURO4 or D4 as the emission standard? If so, it's normal for the error code to appear if the EGR system is not working correctly. I read about this in the forum here. Bertil reported it, and I think Julian did too! If you want more power, buy a new control unit, don't buy used ones. Who knows why your previous owner wanted to get rid of theirs?

"If there's a 96kW PD engine with Euro 4 emissions standards, I might as well die. Then Volkswagen has lied to me. This thing is supposed to only be available with Euro 3. Unfortunately. That's why this engine won't be around for much longer either. Sadly."

Hi,
Don't worry, Matthias will still be with us!
The ASZ engine in the Ibiza is a Euro 3 diesel (there are no EU 4 diesel engines available in the Ibiza at all), because, of course, SEAT will only receive the EU 4 engines some time after Volkswagen.
I had previously assumed that the engine box was originally installed in a different vehicle assembly plant (ASZ), but now we're reading about 115 horsepower, which, combined with the year of manufacture, sounds very much like an AJM engine.
Technically speaking, there's likely a significant development gap between the AJM (which I believe was the first PD device) and the ASZ, so it would probably be best to dispose of the device in the electronics waste bin (or return it to the seller).
Regardless of the merits of ECU/chip tuning, I believe that any "one-size-fits-all" solution can't possibly be gentle or optimal for a specific engine... at least, that's my thinking.
Best regards,

Oops! You're absolutely right. The AXR is the only one with a D4 engine and will be the only one of this generation to survive. Unfortunately! I also love the 96kW [engine]. It took a while for us to become friends, but now we're inseparable!
@monchi
Is the box from eBay?

Technically speaking, there should be a significant amount of development between the AJM (which was probably the first PD) and the ASZ, so it's probably best to dispose of the device in the electronics waste bin (or return it to the seller).
...the gearbox is from a Golf IV TDI with 115 horsepower.
...the device is supposed to fit all 4-cylinder common rail diesel engines. We installed it again today, and you can definitely feel more power at higher RPMs. However, with the device installed, the engine runs terribly below 2000 RPM!
'...the box is from eBay, I paid 150 euros for it, and I'm going to sell the box again on eBay. I'll have a performance upgrade installed through the OBD port.'
'...the 96kW Ibiza naturally has the Euro 3 emissions standard, which means that this engine cannot be installed in new vehicles from 2005 onwards!!'
...the car is incredibly fast in the first four gears, but performance in fifth and sixth gear is rather disappointing; perhaps it just needs to be broken in a bit more, as I've only driven 2,500 kilometers so far!

"These kinds of stories always give me mixed feelings. You buy a brand new Ibiza, which certainly costs a good amount of money, and then you get the cheapest used engine control unit (ECU) from eBay and try to squeeze more power out of it. I really can't understand that. Let's assume, for the sake of argument, that ALL PD TDI engines are technically identical in terms of emissions regulations, which they would have to be if the ECU were supposed to work on every engine (aside from perhaps fuel temperature affecting things). Then why do we have 1.9 PD engines with 100 hp, 115 hp, 130 hp, and 150 hp? Have you ever thought about that?"If the car seems to be having issues with the tuning box, remove it before something breaks. If you're going to get a chip tune, take the new car to a reputable provider who will offer a warranty. What are you going to do if something fails now?
