ECU Installation Help: Guide & Tips

My engine control unit (ECU) is broken (EDC 15+). Can I simply replace it with a new one? The vehicle is an A2 TDI. Do I need to take the car to Audi to have the ECU programmed to match my vehicle, or can I do it myself with VAG-COM? If so, please provide instructions.
