Hello fellow DIY enthusiasts!
I drive a VW Passat Estate (Variant), with an AJM engine producing 85 kW, model year 2000, but first registered in June 1999.
Here is the Volkswagen identification number: WVWZZZ§BZYE016635 4.
The question is whether the replacement interval for all AJM engines must be performed every 60,000 kilometers/miles without exception.
is still handled differently by various workshops.
Can someone tell me more about it?
Sure, I know that this topic has been discussed many times before, but:
The first timing belt was replaced at a Volkswagen workshop around 59,500 kilometers (approximately 36,800 miles), along with the tensioner pulleys.
Now it has approximately 119,000 kilometers on it. Does it definitely need to be changed again at 120,000 kilometers?
On the one hand, it's said yes, on the other hand, it's said no!
Unfortunately, I can't definitively say at this time whether the reinforced tire from Continental was installed back then.
'...and then, according to some information I received, after the initial change, the interval increases to 90,000 km.'
The opposing view is that it's due to the unchangeable mechanics (leadership!).
Does anyone have more detailed information?
@rainer, Ulf, Michael 2:
It would be really great to get the correct replacement part number for the Conti package again. I still have the old Volkswagen invoice somewhere at home. There used to be a link with the part number on the Continental website, but I can't find it anymore.
Thanks again for all the information.
Regards,
Thorsten.

Hi,
While the following link may not be suitable for your engine, the links to Conti might be helpful.
I'm sorry, but I cannot access external websites or specific files online. Therefore, I am unable to translate the text from the provided URL.
Best regards, Rainer.

@Thorsten:
Send an email or a letter to VW including the chassis number, year of manufacture, etc. They can provide you with the exact maintenance intervals and the specific belts that should be used. That way, you'll have it in writing. I did the same thing with my ALH engine back then so I could finally reach 90,000 km.

For Volkswagen Golfs, the mileage limit is 90,000 kilometers starting from model year MJ01; otherwise, it's 60,000 kilometers.

@Julian
What year and model is your car that has the ALH engine?
'I also have the ALH engine in my Bora (it's a 2001/2002 model), and according to the service booklet, the timing belt replacement interval is 120,000 km.'
Best regards, light switch.

Hi,
This raises an interesting question for me:
What is the inspection interval for my vehicle (ASV), first registered in November 2001?
The car is a Seat, manufactured in May 2002, according to the identification number.
The VW table would clearly output 120,000 km for the ASV model year 2002, however, at VW, the model year seems to start later than at Seat – VW: September, Seat: May.
The service documents from Seat seem to have no different versions, or at least that's my impression (I'm too lazy to go out in the pouring rain to get them from the car). They don't even differentiate between the ASV and AFN models based on their production year.
Does anyone have any information about that?
It's still quite a while before I reach that mileage (currently at 34,000 km), but it's interesting nonetheless.
Best regards,
January. 1Z5 CFHF  / AHB H4D

Hello, does anyone know what kind of belt I got back then?
I would now replace all the idler pulleys, the water pump, and the timing belt with its tensioner. (You can do this yourself as well, without needing help from anyone else). Then you'll have about 90,000 km of worry-free driving.

Thank you very much for all your information.
@Rainer: That was the link I was looking for, thank you very much.
But that's precisely why I have a problem with it.
It's a 2000 model year! But it was actually first registered in June 1999. That's why nobody wants to commit to buying it; I'm the only one willing to pay the price, which is really frustrating.
@Julian: Do you still have the exact address? There are probably differences depending on the location!
That would be really great!
Thank you  .
Regards,
Thorsten.

I don't remember the address anymore, and I no longer have any documents here. The department was VK8, but you should be able to find a contact person on the VW website. They will then forward it. Just make sure to write your tax ID number etc. correctly, and they will forward it immediately.

hi
I also have an AJM engine in my Passat, manufactured in November 1999, and I need to change the spark plugs every 60,000 km, which I always do. In your situation, I would simply get them changed.
I wouldn't take that risk. What are 300 euros compared to potentially saving money for a new engine?
It's also a matter of how long you intend to keep driving it. Because if you were going to give it up at, say, 160,000 km, then it doesn't really matter.

Hi, it's me again. So, if you change everything now, you won't need to replace it again until after 90,000 km (with the modified timing belt). The newer AJM engines, starting from the model year 2004, even specify a replacement interval of 120,000 km (let's see how that goes; people often try to extend it beyond the warranty period).

@mersente:
I just received information that the belt change interval is still related to a larger tensioner pulley. However, this in turn causes the belt to become too tight.
The maintenance interval should not be extended beyond 60,000 km.
Oh yes: at 60,000 km, it was replaced.
038 109 454 A 1 Mother
N 019 531 3 1 Screw
045 109 244 A - Deflection roller.
038 903 137 H 1 K Rippriem
038 109 119 N 1 Timing belt.
06B 260 849 A 1 - K Ribbed belt.
045 109 243 B 1 roll.
According to the VW workshop, I just learned that the maintenance interval hasn't changed; it's still every 60,000 km. However, they also said that the water pump doesn't necessarily need to be replaced! Furthermore, atu claims that the tensioner pulley and the belt damper are separate components, while VW says they are a single unit! It would be laughable if it weren't so sad.
I've now reached 119,912 km and, out of desperation, I made an appointment at ATU, who are offering me...
A belt (probably Continental), part number DAY968, 1 piece. Timing belt CT 1021, €49.00.
RV5445 Tensioner pulley VAG, 1 piece, €53.00.
RV5425 Idler Pulley for Ford/VAG, 1 piece, €23.00.
RV 5447 Belt Tension Damper for Ford/VAG, 1 piece, €65.00.
RV9954 Drive disc (camshaft???), Ford/VW, 1 piece, €13.50.
VW5228 Hexagon socket head screw M16x1.5x58, 1 piece, €0.50.
VW9208 Hexagon socket head screw M8x30, strength grade 10.9, VAG, 3 pieces, €1.50.
KWP 445 Water Pump for Audi, Seat, Skoda, Volkswagen - 1 piece - €41.50.
at
I hope someone can decipher these numbers and knows exactly where the differences lie in the components.
Help!!!
Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:
'Hello.'

If the drive pulley is the crankshaft sprocket, then it might already be the modified wheel (with the extended tooth spacing every 180 degrees). If that's the case, the interval would extend to 90,000 km, and possibly even to 120,000 km (if the modified damper and tensioner are also included, along with the obviously modified timing belt).

@Mersente:
Thanks again for the information.
So far, so good.
But how do I find out if they are the new parts?
I expect a response from VW (or rather: I don't expect one anymore ).
Um... by the way, do you happen to know the new part numbers?
Are you sure that the parts from the new 'AJM' engine are compatible with the old one in our Passat 'AJM'?
To my knowledge, I thought that one was only available in vans anymore?
Please, please provide the part numbers.
So long  .
Thorsten.
