Hello. Until recently, I was driving a Bora Variant with the 100 HP PD (ATD) engine. I had the engine control unit (ECU) remapped on that car, increasing the power from 100 to 130 HP and the torque from 340 Nm. I have to say, the car pulled very well.
I've now had a Passat sedan with the standard 130 hp PD engine (AVF) for a week.
Comparable to the values of a tuned Bora.
However, I'm really disappointed with the Passat. It doesn't perform as well as the Bora. The Bora had enough power in every gear at every RPM. I could easily get it up to 210 km/h. The Passat, with some effort, only manages to reach 200 km/h, even though it's supposed to have a top speed of 208 km/h. When I floor the accelerator in the Passat, I don't feel much power.

The car has now been driven 8000 km. I took it to VW and had everything checked and tested. The result was 'Normal performance variation.' There's nothing they can do.

'Has anyone else experienced similar issues with their Passat, and were you able to find a solution (other than modifications/tuning)?'

Your arguments are comparing apples and oranges.
You didn't consider that the Passat is considerably heavier, has more wind resistance, and also can't handle 340 Nm of torque.

Based on my experience, in my 3BG variant with a 96kW engine and 'only' 285 Nm of torque, the car easily reaches almost 220 km/h according to the speedometer and 210 km/h according to the navigation system. If you're experiencing such extreme results and complaining about a loss of power, I suggest you use the search function and do some reading. There are several possible causes. A basic understanding of technical matters should help you identify the problem!

Okay, so my 3BG with the AVF 96kW engine only reaches a maximum of 215 km/h (according to the speedometer) with a lot of effort. At that speed, it's around 4100 rpm, and it doesn't go any further. Up until that point, it's quite fast, except for the last third of the journey. My Golf with the 96kW ASZ engine, which is also completely original, benefits from a longer gear ratio and slightly less weight. It reaches around 230 km/h (according to the speedometer) with a lot of effort and on a flat road, but then it hits around 4150 rpm and stops there.
Okay, the top speeds that I occasionally achieve seem to be higher than yours. Personally, I haven't driven a chip-tuned car yet, but I can imagine that the typical TDI turbo boost really kicks in there, and that's something you might be missing. The ASZ engine also has that boost, but certainly in a more moderate way, since it produces 40 Nm less torque.

Please log your data, and then we'll see.

The Passat only has 8,000 km on it. It hasn't even been properly broken in yet.

Does the 96 kW 3BG engine now have 285 or 310 Nm of torque?

Are there still two versions available?

(Previously 285 with a 5-speed gearbox and 310 with a 6-speed gearbox)

m;

I just checked again - it's still like that!

285nm = 5 gears
310nm = 6-speed.

The 6-speed gearbox has been available since around mid-2001. Since then, the 5-speed gearbox has been discontinued.

Since then, the 5th gear is no longer included in the program
.

According to www.volkswagen.de - Models - Passat - Technical Data, the 5-speed manual transmission is still available!

No longer available in the configurator.

Oops! Honestly? The 5th gear should be a thing of the past by now.

Hopefully not. At least a decent transmission, and preferably one from Audi. No one has ever been able to rationally explain to me why six gears are needed in a diesel engine. icon_wink.gif

Especially diesel engines tend to be noisy because they have a smaller (usable) operating speed range.

I always wished I had a 6-speed gearbox in my Golf 2 naturally aspirated diesel.

And I could also use another one for my 1Z TDI.

"170 at 6 o'clock with a 3000 [something] is a good thing..."

So, it's a game after all... icon_wink.gif

I had the option with my A4 and chose the 5-speed. icon_wink.gif I got a clean-shifting, weather-independent transmission from Audi, and not the clunky 6-speed transmission from VW. icon_smile.gif
Especially since the difference between the two gearboxes is minimal to non-existent. In my case, only the first two gears have a shorter ratio, which might be beneficial for starting from traffic lights, but not with my riding style. }

@julian

You shouldn't let your personal preferences (or even actual differences in shifting performance) regarding Audi and VW transmissions influence your general opinion about 6-speed transmissions.

Assuming all external factors are the same (e.g., shiftability), a 6-speed transmission allows you to operate within narrower RPM ranges, meaning you can more frequently stay within the optimal power band.

And knowing what I know about the 6-speed transmissions, the 6th gear is likely longer than the 5th gear in the 5-speed – or do you have more precise data on that? (I would appreciate it if you did.)

I only know (both at 3000 RPM):
100 HP TDI 5G, just over 140 km/h in 5th gear (Bora Variant).
130 HP TDI, 6-speed, 160-170 km/h in 6th gear (Golf Variant).

My father gets annoyed every time he has to switch from his 5-speed A4 with 96 kW to his 6-speed A4 (company car)! Especially because the reverse gear is in a different location, and he can't seem to get used to it; it's a real problem for him.
He doesn't understand the 6 gears and thinks the 5th gear is better!

Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

'MFG' is an abbreviation for 'Mit freundlichen Grüßen,' which means 'Sincerely' or 'Best regards' in English.

Hmm, that's just another "creed" for the 5th gear.

Does anyone have any facts, for example, gear ratios?

"Since when has VW been using a 6-speed transmission? Isn't it related to the 6-speed transmission that was originally introduced in the Audi 100 2.5 TDI? According to the modular design principle, shouldn't all transmissions for longitudinal engines come from Audi?"

or do you have more specific data??? (I would like to have it).

Hm, yes, I have. Isn't there also a nice gear ratio overview here in this forum? icon_wink.gif
