It would be great if you could provide some information about the expansion to everyone!
What are the challenges involved in expanding [something], and what's the best way to approach it?

Actually, it's not a major problem.
In the first image, you can see two screws (red arrows). One of them is hidden behind a cover. Remove these screws on both sides.
Loosen the collar (it's just clipped on).
After that, I remove the screw under the ashtray and lift the two plastic tabs to detach the ashtray from the center console (by pushing it forward). I've seen people skip this step, but then disconnecting and reconnecting the cigarette lighter cable becomes a real hassle.
Disconnecting the cable from the cigarette lighter socket.
The upper part of the center console can then be lifted at the green line shown in Figure 1. After that, you only need to pull the console out towards the rear.
You'll eventually find the screw you're looking for.

@Bertil
I saw that you drive the same model of Golf as I do (AXR, 08/02)!!! Have you experienced any problems or had to have any warranty repairs done?
So far, I have:
slipping clutch (at 31,000 km), water in the front doors, brake discs have warping (already replaced twice), outside temperature display is malfunctioning (combination meter replaced) |
You can find all my experiences with my AXR in the forum.
They were all just minor things

.
-ZKD
- Oil cooler
-LLK
- Rear shock absorber.
-3(!) detachable/removable tow hitches.
...
The idle vibrations were initially addressed by replacing the PD elements, but then the entire assembly was removed.
Mine is from 09/01 (but is already model year 2002), so it only had a one-year warranty. The used car warranty expired last October.
