I would also like to have a reasonably accurate outside temperature reading while driving.
Advertisement, and now I'm asking you where the sensor should be mounted.

The engine compartment is probably not the ideal location, as it gets hot, especially in diesel engines.

I was thinking it's most likely located near the air intake (possibly in the air filter), on the engine.
(or turbocharger) should be supplied with as much cool air as possible, or am I wrong?
Did I forget something important?

How is the water tank?

Perhaps someone knows where this type of component is typically mounted in cars that have it as standard equipment.

It depends on the purpose for which the temperature is being measured.
There are various outside temperature sensors in the car, each controlled by different control units.

Sure, please provide the text you would like me to translate from German to English.
Combination instrument: located either below the front bumper or in front of the radiator -> purpose: to draw in outside air and to provide a warning about icy road conditions.

Climate Control Unit: Typically located in the water tank and combined with the air quality sensor -> Purpose: To measure the air being drawn in for the interior space.

In the engine compartment, you all know the sensors yourselves icon_smile.gif.

Best regards, Jochen.

I'm going to install an outdoor temperature display.

It has a MAX-MIN function, which means it continues to operate even after the engine is turned off.
The cooler should not heat up the sensor.

To what extent does the hood actually release heat during driving, and how does this heat then dissipate?
is the water tank being sucked into the interior?

The hood dissipates the heat that builds up around the engine. However, this is not very effective due to the insulation mat underneath the hood. While driving, the hood is cooled by the airflow.
You will only noticeably feel the hood getting warm when you remove the insulation mat and then drive with a heavy load at low speeds. In this case, the air being drawn over the water tank by the air conditioning or ventilation system is already warming up.
However, this is relatively insignificant for our latitudes.
When you're in Spain with a running or hot engine exposed to the sun, the air conditioning system draws in air that has already been heated by the sun.

This is the reason why, when the climate control system is set to its maximum cooling mode, it switches to 'interior' mode at the beginning of the cooling process, even though the air inside the car is significantly warmer than the outside air.

I would place your sensor as far forward as possible, at the very bottom, and as far away from the radiator as possible, in the front-end. This area experiences the coldest temperatures in winter (ice warning). Radiation heat is negligible here. Seat also chose this location for the sensor in the Leon.

Best regards, Jochen.

Hi,

either on the front side of the bumper or on the bottom of the side mirrors (which is how Seat did it on the Ibiza).

Best regards,

Jan.
