TDI Community: New Member - Entry Tips?;-)

Hello everyone,

For the past few days, I've been the proud owner of a Golf IV TDI with the AJM engine (according to your table), which is 3 years old and has 58,000 kilometers. It's not that I don't enjoy every kilometer in my diesel car, BUT:

Erstens - der Durchschnittsverbrauch meiner ersten Tankfüllung war 7l bei einer durchschnittlichen Fahrweise - lt. Vorgabe 5,1 l !!!! Wenn´s 6l wären ist das ja vollkommen in Ordnung - aber 7l ?? DaIs that it?

Secondly, at its maximum torque (1900 rpm), it pulls adequately up to the fourth gear. However, on the highway or generally above approximately 130 km/h, the performance seems quite poor... Is this normal? Unfortunately, I don't have any comparison values.

Thirdly, can I resolve the issues mentioned in the first two points by simply 'breaking it in' properly? And if so, how? My previous owner (the first owner) wasn't exactly the fastest driver... Unfortunately, I'm not very familiar with TDI engines. Should I rev the engine higher during the break-in period, or should I generally only use the torque?

I would really appreciate it if you could give me a little help to get started. Because for the past two days, I've been browsing your threads, and I have to say that, as the first forum I found, you guys actually seem to know what you're talking about seriously!

You no longer need to break it in. Just change the oil and oil filter, then add fuel.
If it's not pulling correctly, you can find a lot of information here. A test drive with VAG.com provides a lot of information. You can also perform Ulf's acceleration test. The PD engine relies on torque; if you rev it like a gasoline engine, it needs a lot of fuel without giving you the feeling of corresponding power output. However, it should accelerate up to 180 km/h. Otherwise, the first thing to check is the mass airflow sensor (MAF).

The fuel consumption is highly dependent on your driving style. If you drive the TDI like a gasoline engine (revving it high), the fuel consumption will increase significantly. A colleague of mine has an ASZ engine that averages 8.5 liters, but he drives aggressively. However, achieving around 5.x liters is also possible. So, first get used to driving the TDI in its intended way and then try a tankful while consciously focusing on fuel efficiency.

Otherwise, follow Christians' advice and possibly change the oil and filter. Then, let it warm up properly and then drive a bit on the highway, gradually increasing speed. Finally, give it a good run for about 50 km. This often works wonders, especially if it was mainly used in the city. If that doesn't help, you should check the mass airflow sensor (MAF). Even an ALH engine can still accelerate reasonably well at 130 km/h.
