Hey fellow mechanics,
I wanted to install a VW radio (BETA) in a boat and bought an adapter for it. However, the adapter now requires significantly more connections than just positive, negative, and speaker wires.
Can someone tell me what the following terminals are for?
Terminal 15 (constant power?).
Terminal 30 (ignition?)
Terminal 58.
Thank you for the suggestions. Unfortunately, the search function didn't help me much.
Greetings.
Eike.

Hi there,
Thank you for the quick help. I think I'll be able to solve the problem now where I have to re-enter the code every time I turn on the radio.
Does anyone have an idea about how much power the 'Dauerplus' connection needs to provide? Is it only used for storing data and the 'radio deactivation detection,' or does it actually supply the main power, with the 'ignition' serving only as an on/off switch?
'In boats, battery disconnect switches are commonly installed to prevent the battery from discharging during periods when the boat is docked. Now I need a solution for the 'code issue' without the battery being drained after 2 weeks. My idea is to run a constant positive connection with a fuse, say 100mA, directly to the radio.'
Greetings.
Eike.

That's completely different.
Some devices draw power directly from the ignition circuit, while others are connected to the constant positive terminal.
However, if the radio is working correctly and properly connected, a healthy battery will not drain completely within two weeks.

Hello Eike,
Which BETA (generation)?
Starting with generation 5 vehicles (including the G4 and related models), Volkswagen radios have a so-called "SAFE" terminal (A5) that is required for them to function. Normally, this SAFE terminal is connected to the K-bus for diagnostic purposes, allowing these radios to be diagnosed. Additionally, the radios are "linked" to the vehicle so that you don't have to enter the code each time. This involves storing the radio's serial number in various control units (ECUs). I'm not entirely sure where all of this data is stored, but it's likely within the engine control unit (ECU), where you can also read out the SNR (Serial Number Register).

Hi,
If it's an older version of the Beta (meaning not the one that Bertil is referring to), you can assume that it draws its power from the constant positive terminal.
In VW vehicles, the "switched plus" wire is connected to what's called an "S-contact," which shouldn't be heavily loaded. That's why the power needs to come through the "constant plus" line. The other wire only tells the radio to turn on if it was previously off. This type of radio can also be turned back on by pressing the power button again, even with the ignition off – another clue.
Your 100mA fuse probably won't survive that.
Just measure how much power the radio consumes when it's turned off and disconnected from the "switched plus" terminal (or with the ignition off). If it's only drawing a few milliamperes, then you shouldn't worry about your battery.
Best regards,
Jan.

Hi there,
It should be one of the newer generations of devices. It comes from a G4 series. The production date of the radio should be the 43rd week of 2001, if I interpret the stamp '4301' correctly. The radio was manufactured by Blaupunkt in Portugal.
Am I correct in understanding that the code is only checked if the continuous plus subscription has been interrupted?
I suspect that the radio draws most of its power through terminal 30, as that cable is slightly thicker than the one connected to terminal 15.
Greetings.
Eike.

Hi Eike,
If it's from the G4 series, then it's a BETA 5.
You will find the correct wiring diagram for this radio in the attachment.
Here's a small tip from me: set the SAF connection to 12V... that will also solve the issue with code retention.
"+" indicates a constant power supply, and the entire radio was powered through it.
S is the ignition switch's S terminal.
"Terminal 15 is no longer typically found in VW radios, as everything is now connected via the 'S' terminal. The 'S' terminal is not the same as terminal 15! The 'S' terminal remains active (depending on the ignition switch) even after the ignition has been switched off, and only deactivates when the key is removed."

Normally, this SAFE clamp is connected to the K-bus for diagnostics. These radios are capable of diagnostics.
As can already be seen from the connection diagram you posted:
The save pin is not located on the diagnostic bus; it has its own dedicated connection on the connector.

For information:
The radios have 2 bus connections: SAFE, which is related to the immobilizer system, and K, which connects to the central diagnostic bus. However, often the SAFE connection in the vehicle is simply connected to +12V. Although the SAFE connection is designed as a bus connection, whether it's actually used depends on the vehicle's configuration. This is certainly the case for vehicles in China (I don't have any information about EU-spec vehicles).

How do you obtain information about Chinese vehicles?
In the wiring diagram for the German Sharan TDI manufactured in 2004 (model number 7M62T3), the...
SAVE connection to terminal 30a, fuse 32.

S is the ignition switch's S terminal.
Normally, VW radios no longer have a terminal 15, as everything is switched via the S contact. The S contact is not the same as 15! The S contact remains active (depending on the ignition switch) even after the ignition has been turned off, and only deactivates when the key is removed.
Hello Bertil,
Unfortunately, the pin configuration is different on my BETA device.
Where you have SAF, I have +, and where you have +, I have UB+.
'For me, 'K' refers to the K-bus, and '>>' corresponds to GA (which is probably the same thing).'
The rest seems to be the same. For me, 'S' refers to an S-contact. And is that contact now the one that turns the radio on and off?
Greetings.
Eike.

Hi Eike,
What's different about it?
The SAF voltage at your location is +12V and nothing more (see the discussion above). "Ub+" and "+" are the same thing, just like "K" refers to the K-bus, and "S" refers to the S-contact. "GA" or ">>" represents the GALA signal for speed-dependent volume control.
