Hello!
Today, I replaced the three fuel injectors in my 12-year-old Audi 80 TDI (1Z), and I was quite surprised when I examined the injectors.
The engine was still running perfectly and it wasn't smoking, but I can't imagine that injector nozzles that are so coked up would still produce a good spray pattern .
Well, everyone can form their own opinion about whether it's better to replace those good things after all.
Have fun trying it out!
Regards - Weini

When should the nozzles normally be replaced?

they will probably look like mine, which currently have 243,000 km.

Two of them look like they've dripped.

which I consider to be more likely the cause:
with chip tuning from ********
Over-injection can lead to thermal problems.
Nevertheless, fuel injectors are wear-and-tear parts that should be regularly checked.

I can't imagine that it's related to the chip tuning. I've had the chip installed for 210,000 km now, and I'm completely satisfied with it.
Yes - nozzles are definitely wear parts!. I completely agree with that, and replacing them after a certain amount of use (as can be seen) is definitely recommended! }

Why only three???
Do yourself (or your engine) a favor and replace the fourth one too.
Otherwise, these are nice pictures for the 'Why should I do this or that on a TDI?' collection. They fit well with the AGR pictures.
Best regards, Rudi.

Why only three????
Because the needle lifter failed about a year ago (it was making strong, jerky movements) and has already been replaced.
Visually, it didn't look nearly as bad as the three nozzles do now.
Interestingly, the NHG (noise, vibration, and harshness) and the clutch master cylinder were the ONLY parts that have failed so far. We've had 1 exhaust pipe, 1 water pump, 1 clutch, 1 wheel bearing, etc. And that's after 12 years!
I'm really proud of my car.

I once read that someone cleaned their fuel injectors in an ultrasonic cleaner.
Will it make a difference?
Dripping nozzles certainly won't fix the problem, but what about carbon buildup?
Does anyone have information about the cost-benefit analysis?
Best regards,

@obermeister
'The ultrasonic cleaner might dissolve the Siff, but with that kind of mileage, the springs will be worn out, the drill bits will lose their sharpness, and so on. At that point, the ultrasonic cleaner won't help anymore...'

I've been thinking about it for a long time. But, as you also mentioned, everything is still working perfectly: no smoke, low fuel consumption, and good performance.
Have you noticed any tangible changes since the switch?

What kind of gasoline do you usually use? Aral, Shell, Esso, etc.?
