Hello everyone!

Please don't scold me; I'll keep this off-topic discussion very brief.

Today I drove about 500 km on a business trip in a brand new Passat 3B estate with a 96 kW PD engine.
Overall, I have to say that the car was fun to drive. icon_biggrin.gif
Compared to my previous VP-TDI engine, I found the power delivery to be very uneven, as there was almost no torque until 1500 rpm, followed by a massive surge in torque afterwards.
Accelerating in the RPM range between 1700 and 2500 is really fun because the engine simply pulls strongly. However, I find the power dip after a quick gear change to be quite significant. The variable valve timing (VP) helps it pull more quickly again.
I find it quite strange that there's such a significant lack of torque below 1500 RPM.
I even stalled the car once icon_redface.gif because the PD barely engages just above LL speed. I haven't stalled my VP engine even once during its nearly 170,000 km, it resists vehemently!
In the higher speed range, I found the PD to be somewhat lackluster. Starting around 180/190 km/h on the speedometer, it became sluggish and required considerable effort and acceleration to reach a top speed of approximately 220 km/h.
I also noticed that the Passat wagon had a relatively short gear ratio in 6th gear. Does the sedan have a longer gear ratio? In any case, the engine speed at 100 km/h was about 2000 rpm. With this, the overall gearing is hardly longer than that of my A3.
I also found shocking the fuel consumption figures of the MFA on the Bleifuss model: up to 14.5 liters per 100km were injected into the combustion chambers icon_eek.gif icon_eek.gif icon_eek.gif.
Overall, I find the VP's characteristics to be much more harmonious and easier to drive. In terms of average fuel consumption, the VP clearly has the advantage.

Okay, that's enough now.

Regards,
Alex.

hi alex,

'That's exactly how I felt after my first drive with my 96kW car. It stalled, gave me a jolt in the back around 1500 RPM, and felt sluggish at higher speeds.'

'Meanwhile, I no longer want to give up this car. We've become a cohesive unit, and the initial adjustment problems have disappeared. After the engine swap a few weeks ago, I'm now getting around 6.1 liters per 100 kilometers, even with aggressive driving. The sluggishness at high speeds has also improved.'

But I agree with you on one point. The VP skis perform better when turning, and they are also a bit more agile at the top [of the slope].

The VP skis perform better when turning, and are also slightly more agile at the top.

Sure, with 90 or 110 horsepower, those engines simply have shorter gear ratios; have you considered that? And as far as being 'rev-happy,' my AWX engine was the least aggressive TDI in the VW/Audi group so far. Only the CR engines from Mercedes-Benz and BMW are better in that regard.
And anyone who creeps around consuming 4.1 liters per 100 kilometers should not be surprised if the catalytic converter has been tampered with. icon_wink.gif

@julian

My A4 (AFN engine) with a tuning chip produces around 140 horsepower in its highest setting, and it accelerates more smoothly, I think! And that's not necessarily just explainable by a shorter gear ratio, in my opinion.

But as I already said: I wouldn't give up my AWX anymore.

I definitely don't want my AFN-G3 back anymore – at the beginning, I wasn't always sure about it...

And anyone who drives around consuming 4.1 liters per 100 kilometers should not be surprised if the catalytic converter fails. icon_rolleyes.gif
Why do I now think that I am the one being referred to? icon_cool.gif

And even if that were the case, I rely on the (compared to gasoline engines, based on my experience with the AFN) pleasantly short "run-in period" of just a few kilometers }.

And as rev-happy as my AWX has been, no other TDI engine in the VW/Audi group has been quite as exhilarating. Only the CR engines from Mercedes-Benz and BMW are better.

Besides the 330d, and anything above a 270CDI, you should consider looking for a suitable V6 TDI engine; you'll quickly change your mind. From the VAG group, I haven't seen any four-cylinder engines on the highway that have outpaced it.

So, when it comes to top speed, the Passat V6 (163 hp) and the Octavia (130 hp) are quite different. The Passat doesn't stand a chance up to 180 km/h, but then the Octavia takes over.

The ASZ spins like crazy at high RPMs (similar to Julian's AWX). It doesn't have much 'stiffness' at those speeds...
It could also be because he usually gets it above 3000...

Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

"Hi,"

Okay, in my case with this particular PD (presumably a piece of equipment), the non-harmonic distortion that Donalexo mentioned isn't as pronounced.
The transmission is a disgrace. Starting in first gear with a trailer attached is extremely difficult because the gearing is far too long. Unfortunately, prolonged clutch engagement becomes a regular occurrence.

Until 180 horsepower, the Passat doesn't compete, and then there's the Octavia.
CU Gremlin

Is that exactly what these RPM ranges are referring to?

Hmm, highly overpowered Polos with their combat weight probably aren't the most suitable vehicles for a fair comparison.

Hi there!

I don't know what VW did with that 130 horsepower engine.
Okay, I'm ready. Please provide the German text you want me to translate into English.

I've noticed the exact same thing about the engine; it really takes off once it reaches a certain RPM.

I can easily drive my 1Z around the parking lot at 900 RPM without any problems icon_wink.gif.

Okay, please provide the German text you would like me to translate into English. I will only provide the translation.

Okay, so my accelerator pedal is anything but sensitive... no matter where I press it. The engine is great (yes, there's a slight hesitation at 1800 rpm, but that's why I have a vehicle with a turbo...).
