Building on successes with gasoline engines, the tuning industry has also recognized TDIs as a market for sports exhaust systems and offers tuning replacements for practically every standard part.
It is likely that customer awareness, to some extent, plays a role, as specially designed resonance exhaust systems can significantly increase performance. Unfortunately, this only applies to naturally aspirated engines. In a TDI engine, the turbocharger acts as an obstruction to resonances, meaning... Performance gains through exhaust resonance tuning are practically impossible with TDI engines. The exhaust flow, which is smoothed out by the catalytic converter, is also the reason why typical aftermarket exhaust systems on TDIs don't produce a sound that even remotely resembles the sound of a naturally aspirated engine. Of the sound spectrum in the exhaust gases, only low-frequency rumble frequencies remain after passing through the turbocharger, and only these can be transmitted by the exhaust system to the audience's ears. Systems specifically tuned for TDIs can make the engine noise sound a bit more robust and may reduce the turbocharger whine less, but there's not much more that can be done in terms of "sound" with TDIs. The exhaust flow capacity of the original TDI exhaust systems is perfectly adequate even with the standard engine power; reducing back pressure, for example by removing intermediate silencers, generally does not result in any (noticeable) increase in performance, based on our experience. Even on trips without a catalytic converter or exhaust system (due to defects), there is often a noticeable lack of power, which suggests a well-coordinated factory setup between the engine and exhaust system. Modifications to the exhaust system can only contribute to increased performance if the engine is also significantly tuned to increase the exhaust flow. As long as the TDI tuning remains purely electronic, the turbocharger is likely to reach its performance limits before the exhaust pipe diameter becomes too restrictive. Conclusion: Sport exhaust systems and parts for TDIs, like sport air filters, are purely cosmetic upgrades with no performance benefit as long as the engine's hardware remains stock. If the exhaust back pressure is reduced too much, it can even lead to a loss of power.
