Hello,

Does anyone here know the exact torque specification for tightening the tie rod ends on a Volkswagen Golf 4?

I'm a bit confused by these reference books!

In one, it says 45 Nm, and in the other, it says 15 Nm plus 90 degrees!!!

Well, what now...?

Please help.

Thank you.

Regards,
Bidding Dohlens.

Hello,

'In my Octavia repair manual, it states 70Nm plus an additional 90 degrees of rotation for the lower ball joint nut.' The torque setting for the nut at the top of the tie rod is 30 Nm.
It also states that the screw should always be replaced, and this also applies to the nut (self-locking).

Best regards,

renwal

P.S. The values for the Octavia should be transferable to the Golf IV, Seat Leon, Audi A3, etc.

Have you ever thought that there are different strengths of stabilizers, as well as different types of coupling rods? icon_rolleyes.gif

The information provided by renwal does not apply to the Golf 4.

The bolt that goes into the stabilizer bar with a nut should be tightened to 30 Nm, while the other bolt that goes into the hub carrier should be tightened to 45 Nm.

Remember that these are self-locking parts, so always take new ones from the dealer! Once the screw connection is loosened, it's trash!

Okay, 45 Nm and nothing to do with 90 degrees!!!

It's quite strange that two different books provide different information!

Thank you, Julian.

Hello,

I just checked the electronic VW 'original documents' again.
'There it says:'
Hexagon screw: Tighten to 15 Nm and rotate 90 degrees further. Replace after each disassembly.
Self-locking hex nut: Tighten to 15 Nm and rotate an additional 90 degrees. Replace after each disassembly.

The values are for the Golf IV MJ models from 1998-2003; only the R32 has a different wheel suspension.
Of course, there are different types of stabilizers, but the torque specifications for the tie rod seem to be the same across all models.

Best regards,

renwal

p.s. The values for the Octavia are incorrect; the book appears to have a printing error.
The value of 70 Nm + 90 degrees can almost exclusively be used for the screw securing the rear suspension arm.

Use the adjustable wrench that has been attached icon_wink.gif.
(I've been doing this for over 20 years without any major problems.)

It's not such a critical part like, for example, ZK or connecting rod screws... (only) with something like that would I be a bit more careful icon_cool.gif.

I just went to the dealer and asked about it!

The expert says: 'Tighten both screws to 15 Nm plus 90 degrees!!!'

Narf... one is a screw and the other is a nut that is tightened... only an idiot would tighten the screw when connecting the stabilizer bar... oh, VW...

'Calm down, Julian, calm down!!!'

I meant the mother, I wrote 'Schraube' by mistake, that was my error! I meant mother!!!! I meant that both parts should be tightened with the same torque!

'Of course, you shouldn't tighten that screw, otherwise it wouldn't have been pre-installed in that part in the first place!!!'
