Other headlights for the Golf IV.
The headlights on the Golf IV are notoriously bad. I've been able to improve things somewhat by using different bulbs, but the light distribution is still spotty and unsatisfactory. I didn't want to switch to Xenon because it's too expensive and complicated. So, here's my question: Has anyone else had experience with different headlights on a Golf IV?

There are various providers offering headlights that are more or less interesting. However, I didn't want to try them all out.
I would appreciate it if you could share some personal experiences.

Hella offers (Bi)Xenon headlights for retrofitting that provide good illumination. However, I didn't like the appearance, so I switched to the standard Xenon headlights from VW. It's not overly expensive or complicated, and the improved lighting is a significant benefit.

Halogen headlights produce much less stray light than xenon headlights, and the high beam is better (H7 instead of H1)! icon_smile.gif

Contact a recycling company, for example, www.r-a-r.de.

"I'm actually completely satisfied with my original Xenon headlights. They seem very uniform, have a good range, and the high beam significantly improves visibility at night. However, I find the fact that there are four indicator bulbs a bit unattractive."

... That's strange. I hear that a lot, but mine seems to be doing fine.
My G4 has the best lighting I've ever had.
However, I have also driven several G4s where I reached for the light switch... but it was already on icon_wink.gif.

Then you are probably one of the lucky ones who use Hella products.

I had the Valeo ones installed, and on my first drive in fog, it was immediately clear that the scattered light was incredibly annoying. You're essentially driving towards a wall, and the integrated daytime running lights only make it worse at that height.

During my time with my G4, I always installed Philips +50% bulbs (I'm not sure of the exact model name). While they only last about half as long as standard bulbs, they provide significantly more brightness.

I also installed these Philio lamps. The range of illumination is better, but the light distribution is not very uniform. There are very noticeable light and dark transitions.
According to a report I read from Hella, you should avoid cheap products. Now I'm not sure if Hella is setting the bar very high, or if they're simply right. With that popular online retailer, you can find quite nice Hella knock-offs. I was wondering if anyone has experience with those. Experiences are always good, but you don't have to go through everything yourself (I also bought my adapter here).
If the original G4 headlights from Hella are better, I'll see if I can replace my current Valeo headlights with them. My current headlights aren't very good.

Hella is right about that. I once read a test about headlights and replicas, but I don't remember where. Before you buy cheap knock-offs on eBay and end up being even more frustrated, just take a deep breath and buy something decent.

Has anyone had any experience with these cheap products?
As far as I can see, there are also some from in.pro. They also manufacture things like central locking systems and similar items.
I would appreciate hearing about your experiences.
Is the difference between the original headlights from Hella and Valeo really that extreme?
Otherwise, perhaps simply replacing it with a Hella part salvaged from a scrapyard would be sufficient.

They don't manufacture anything themselves. "Pro" is a trading company. They purchase products from various manufacturers and sell them under their own brand label.

Okay, I checked. Julian is right, they are Hella SW bulbs. I'm not familiar with any stray light in foggy conditions. There's only a slight vertical beam upwards with the high beam, but it's only noticeable when looking directly at it. The low beam is almost completely free of dark spots. The light is very good with the Phillips "Vision Plus" bulbs (unfortunately, they don't last very long).
Unfortunately, I can't make a comparison to the Golf's xenon lights. However, the BMW's xenon lights bother me because of the overly sharp transition between bright and dark areas. It's also not significantly better than the lights on my G4.

'Yep, the Valeos leak like crazy and the light distribution around them is not great. The only products I would personally install as headlights are from Hella or Bosch. Everything else belongs in the trash because it's just cheap junk.'

Yes, the Golf IV with Xenon headlights also has a very pronounced bright-to-dark transition. That's what I meant when I said "I had to get used to it." After a rather long adjustment period, I wouldn't want to do without it now. While there's a noticeable area where the light abruptly stops and obstacles beyond that area tend to reflect light poorly, the overall illumination of the road is very uniform and extends far into the right-hand side. Combined with the high beams, there's not much that could make me happier on country roads (in terms of lighting).
I believe the high beam bulbs on my Golf are different from those on our car, which doesn't have xenon headlights. He probably also has Valeo parts, because they produce a lot of stray light.

Back then, I probably didn't have Valeo headlights on my Golf IV, because I was very satisfied with my headlights combined with the Philips Vision +50% bulbs. Those things were really bright and were nothing like the standard bulbs.
