Hello, esteemed experts.
When accelerating in the lower gears, the handbrake light illuminates around 2000 RPM. The more I press the accelerator, the longer it takes for the light to turn off. I'm driving a 1994 Passat TDI with a 1Z engine. The only modifications to the vehicle are the fuel injectors (AFN), and the EGR valve has been disabled with a metal plate. The car has over 350,000 kilometers on the odometer. The handbrake switch is working correctly, and I couldn't find any loose connections or similar issues with the wiring.
My concern now is that the light is trying to tell me something is wrong. Does anyone know what it might mean?
Best regards,
Marc Lesch

Hi,
Does your car have ABS? Do you have enough brake fluid in it?

Hello,
No, it's one of the few without ABS. The brake fluid level is just below the maximum mark.

Hello,
The warning light indicates either that the handbrake is engaged or that there is insufficient brake fluid.
It's probably the latter. When starting, the fluid level fluctuates, and the float makes contact. Check your brake pads; if they're worn, the reservoir level will drop, and the light will come on. If you just top it off, you might have to drain some fluid when you replace the pads next time, otherwise the toxic fluid could overflow.
Best regards,
josi

Could it be that the switch on the handbrake is somehow loose or faulty, and that's why the light comes on when accelerating rapidly?

Yes, that's possible.
While I personally find it quite unusual, since there's probably enough brake fluid available, I would also investigate this area, including the wiring harness to the switch (potential chafing points leading to a short circuit when accelerating). Gruß Ulf

Thank you to everyone who took the time to think about my problem.
After checking the brake fluid level again with a bright flashlight, I had to note that the level was quite low. It seems I have a small leak in the braking system.
Anyway, now that we've topped up the brake fluid, things should be quiet for a while.
Best regards,

Hi Marc,
A leak in the brake line is not something to be taken lightly!
- The liquid corrodes the paint and then the metal itself.
- In the high-pressure section, it's even worse because the braking force can suddenly disappear.
Are you sure it wasn't just the normal bedding-in process for the disc brakes?
As the friction material wears down, the piston moves further outwards, thereby consuming more and more volume.
Therefore, when replacing them, you must be careful that the reservoir does not overflow when you push the wheel cylinder pistons back in.
With drum brakes, this is not the case; they adjust differently, and the same volume is always taken up.

... there was another T.
I don't know what the f*ck it was.
