I used to have an 86-spec engine in my Golf. Now I have a replacement 90-spec engine. Some parts have been modified over the years.

The engine is not drawing in any diesel fuel.
The electric motor is now disconnected.

Do the newer models have their own diesel pump to draw fuel from the tank?
I'm not aware of that!?!

The old pump had a round aluminum casing mounted on top.
This feature is no longer available on the new model. Instead, there is a flange with two hose connections.

Rotary vane pump seized or defective.

Are +12V present? Does the valve switch?

No, but all-wheel-drive models are supposed to have an electric pump in the tank because the tank is divided into two sections, and otherwise it wouldn't be able to be emptied.

The fuel injection pump should definitely be able to draw fuel on its own. Gear oil bottles have a snorkel.
Fill a bottle of gear oil with biodiesel and connect the snorkel to the pump's inlet.
Place the return hose into a (clean) glass.
Then, simultaneously start the infusion and the engine. If sufficient fuel (under pressure) comes out of the return line, you've succeeded.

Best regards, Rainer.

Hello Rainer,

Do you think I should use biodiesel because it's more aggressive and might potentially unclog a stuck fuel pump?

I'm just going to double-check the 12V connection and the motor ground. After all, the motor is only connected to the chassis via rubber mounts.

If none of this helps, I will rebuild the old pump.
--> rotate both motors to the 'mark' position, and reposition the pump...

Hello,
Happy New Year!
Is the pump housing completely empty? If so, first fill it through the return connection with diesel fuel. The vane pump only draws fluid when it is submerged in liquid.

Best regards, Benno.

Thank you, it was the empty pump. It actually seemed full, but something wasn't right. Now it's running smoothly again.
