Hello everyone!

The brakes on our two vehicles, the A3 and the G4, will soon need to be overhauled.
When you compare the prices of parts at a VAG dealership with various offers from aftermarket suppliers and online retailers, there are often significant price differences. This naturally raises questions about the quality of the products being offered.

Who knows which manufacturer acts as an original equipment supplier for the VAG group?

Furthermore, I would be interested in learning about experiences regarding the quality of brake pads and rotors from aftermarket suppliers. On egedöns, I came across some offers that included Ferodo brake pads, but the manufacturer of the rotors included in the set was not specified icon_confused.gif.

"I just wanted to have one set of axles for the front and rear ready in the garage, so that we can start replacing them immediately when they reach their wear limit. And if you can take your time with the purchase process, without feeling rushed, then you also have the opportunity to find a good deal where the quality is right." icon_wink.gif

Thank you for your contributions.

Regards,
Alex.

'Well, I wouldn't buy brake pads from a third-party seller on eBay, because there are often very good brand imitations that are actually really terrible quality. I would be cautious about that.'

Manufacturers of brake pads include ATS, Pagid, and Ferodo. When you order brake pads from a dealer, you will receive one of these three brands.

Recommended, e.g.:

www.webteile24.de
www.nordmannbrakes.de

These parts are from the same manufacturer as those used in VW vehicles, etc., but they do not have the VAG marking. They are even supposed to come from the same production line. icon_smile.gif

@alex

It all boils down to a matter of belief now. I bought brake, suspension, and exhaust parts from egedöns for my old Golf for quite some time. I haven't actually had any negative experiences. The brake pads were usually generic products, but they lasted at least as long as the parts from ATU, which were at least twice as expensive. But if you do buy there, make sure you're not ordering from a shady dealer...

For me, this isn't a matter of faith, because I've had several unpleasant experiences.

Not only if the rotors were from brand A and the pads were from brand B, but even if both had the same name. In that case, the friction coefficients are completely mismatched, and the braking performance was absolutely terrible.

It's completely irrelevant how long these things last; it will definitely cause a significant delay.

There were no such negative experiences with genuine parts.

Regarding this topic, I could also ask cyclists for their opinion. There's a factor of 3-4 difference in price between the cheapest and the branded tire options... I don't know anyone who actually saves money by going with the cheaper option.

@gremlin

That's already clear! But as I wrote: no negative experiences... And if they hadn't delayed things properly, that would have been a negative experience.

That's nonsense again. There's no evidence to support that, and you don't even know which manufacturer makes the parts.

With a specific part number, you might receive products from various manufacturers, depending on what the distribution center currently has in stock. Therefore, the statement is nonsensical.

Having repaired the 288 brake system on numerous cars many times, and with most customers requesting that I use GENUINE parts for their brakes, I have accumulated a sufficient stock of brake pads with the same part number.

Including brands such as ATE, TEXTAR, FERODO, and JURID.

Supplied under the same part number.

I personally only use so-called 'identity' parts from the accessories market. Firstly, it's cheaper, and secondly, I know who manufactured the pieces before I even open the package.

Regards,

Manuel.

if you mean...

As soon as a car manufacturer's logo is on it, the part *must* meet the specifications. Otherwise, it will be very, very, very expensive.

If the part is only intended for the free market, it only needs to meet the legal requirements, which are quite lax.

Just because a part looks the same and has a brand name doesn't necessarily mean it meets the same specifications as the original replacement part.

But always make sure to skimp on tires and brakes, but don't come crying to me if you demolish your bumper!

Why not? If a company is capable of producing linings for different types of vehicles, and not just one single type, then it should also be able to produce two different kinds for a single vehicle. The extent to which this actually happens, and whether you can tell by the part numbers, is obviously insider knowledge.

I find it hard to believe that a company like ATE would supply the kind of low-quality parts that I bought as an accessory last year, specifically designed to fit with the Powerdisc brake rotors, to Volkswagen Audi Group (VAG).
Since it's not cost-effective for me, as an end consumer, to have a proper inspection done before buying parts, I'm going back to purchasing original parts. By the way, all three sets of brake pads that have been installed on my car so far have been from Textar.

There are even more than two of them running.

And even you should understand that I can put whatever I want into the funnel at the front.

and if it only saves 20 cents per topping...

Welcome to reality.

Hello everyone!

Yesterday, I took a closer look at the brake components installed in my A3. On the front axle, the FSIII braking system is installed with 280mm brake discs (internally ventilated), just like on our G4 icon_biggrin.gif.
The brake discs and pads are sourced from the VAG parts inventory and each has a corresponding marking. Additionally, the designation "WTR" (manufacturer?) is found on the discs, and "GALFER 4595" (manufacturer, product name?) is found on the pads.

At the rear axle, the standard 232mm brake discs are installed, which also bear the designation "WTR". I couldn't find any markings on the rear brake pads.

I am definitely not satisfied with the braking performance, especially in wet conditions or when road salt has been applied. Sometimes, it takes almost two seconds before the full braking force is engaged. I find that unacceptable.

As mentioned above, the Golf has exactly the same braking system at the front as it does at the rear. However, the Golf doesn't experience any wet brake problems. Therefore, the issue must be related to the friction pairing between the brake pads and the brake discs. I will check which parts are installed there when I have the opportunity.
In the AKTE (presumably a document or record), I was also unable to find any changes to the guide rails around the windows (identical part number).

I'm currently considering switching to slotted sport brake discs from Zimmermann to improve the response in wet conditions. I would then combine these with standard Ferodo pads.

For me, brake fade isn't really a problem because I don't perform sudden, hard braking and I rarely drive long distances downhill in the mountains. Instead, what's more important for me is good wet braking performance, as I mostly drive on rural roads in forested areas.

I would appreciate qualified comments on the materials used and my renovation plans.

Regards,
Alex.

Hi Alex,

Just to get you thinking – I don't have the exact data at hand:

The A4 had those massive salt-related issues, didn't it?

If your A3 is experiencing issues while the Golf isn't, even with the same setup, it can't be due to components that are further away or less directly involved.

If the A3 is already creating a nice jet of saltwater at the front and directing it onto the windshield, and if the Golf has better sealing, then this effect can occur.

Was wurde bei dem A4 damals geĂ€ndert – war es ein "weiter entferntes Teil", oder war es das Blechteil, das direkt neben der Scheibe saß?

... there was another T.

I don't know what the f*ck it was.

I learned from an employee at Audi that all suppliers who deliver parts to the manufacturer are not allowed to produce their own parts on the same assembly line, because the assembly line belongs to the manufacturer, not the supplier.

Now, no one is preventing the supplier from placing an identical product next to it – but equally, no one is stopping them from manufacturing slightly modified parts there.

There are parts that you can buy as non-original parts because they are cheaper and still fit, but I've stopped doing that with brakes and "complex parts." I used to buy those kinds of brakes for my Polo and always had problems until I eventually bought original parts. And when you think about the salt-related brake issues, you realize that even small changes in composition can have a big impact.[/quote]

Hi Alex,

I know there are many factors.en zu berĂŒcksichtigen wie Reaktionszeit und so. It's subjective, but I believe the performance is 100% identical to the original, so there are no deviations. The condition was difficult to assess as it could be interpreted as either better or worse. It was impossible to identify the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of the brake pads because they were too dirty.

Hi, here's my experience:

Replace the brake pads from the accessories (e.g., "sport" or possibly Zimmermann) as soon as it's time
Quote:
to change them
.
I installed new brake discs and pads on my A3. The braking performance is good, and there's less rust compared to the original discs.
Disadvantage: The panes tend to warp. I never experienced this problem with the original panes.

Best regards, Rainer.

I then braked using what the Golf offered and could only watch as I overtook the 3-series BMW that was about 30 meters in front of me, which was also braking heavily. Ultimately, I came to a stop about 6 meters ahead of it. Fortunately, nothing happened, but the BMW's braking performance was significantly better. I know there are many factors to consider, such as reaction time and so on.

...and above all, the power that the tires can deliver to the road without locking up.

IMO, every brake hydraulic system should be able to "fail" in such a way that, with the pedal fully depressed, it locks up the tires. If the brakes are weaker than that, they compromise safety .

Could it still be the case that even with modern cars on a dry road, full braking might not activate the initial ABS control range?
