Hello,
In Romania, a Dacia (possibly a Renault 12?) is reportedly going to be equipped with a diesel engine.
It should have a maximum engine displacement of 1.2 liters and a longitudinally mounted engine.
The gearbox must be mounted at the rear.
The drive shafts should be the same length (for front-wheel drive vehicles).
Which manufacturer has ever produced something like that?
Thank you for your help.

Audi, VW, Peugeot, ... and many others.
What's the point of the question?
Glaubst du die haben was neues erfunden? Unfortunately not...
Interestingly, VW even managed to install drive shafts of the same length with the transverse engine (G5 TDI, the largest engine variant). Gruß Bertil

Hi,
@Bertil:
Which model is Peugeot doing that with?
Is this about the 607?
Besides that, I could also imagine some American manufacturers being involved, as there are quite a few large vehicles with front-wheel drive (and possibly also a longitudinally mounted engine).
It's not exactly the best concept, is it?
The design almost inevitably leads to a 'bear-like' appearance, and the weight distribution isn't necessarily advantageous either.
On the other hand, it doesn't bother me, and apparently it doesn't bother enough other people either.

It's been quite some time. I can't recall the model name at the moment.
The question was, after all, who could have ever built something like that!
By the way, the very first front-wheel-drive vehicle was a Packard, built with the exact same design.
Front-wheel-drive cars with an engine mounted transversely (perpendicular to the direction of travel) have only been common since the introduction of the Mini in the 1960s.
The first European front-wheel-drive model appeared in 1934, produced by Citroën (the 11CV or "Gangsterlimousine").
The concept is not new at all, but rather quite outdated. Gruß Bertil

You're misunderstanding me.
A Dacia from 1995 is going to be modified.
This car belongs to an acquaintance in Romania, and I need to find out which diesel engines are compatible with it.
An ideal response from you would be, for example:
VW Polo Diesel, 1198 cm³, manufactured in 1988-1990.

You can easily see from the answers that no one understood the question the way you intended it to be answered. Therefore, the problem is likely in the wording.
However, I can't think of any small diesel engines with that design off the top of my head. As you can see from the responses, the manufacturers tend to offer larger machines. A Polo engine probably won't meet your requirements.

Hi,
You won't find anything there. I can only think of one 1.2 diesel engine off the top of my head, and that's the engine from the 3L Lupo. It has around 65 or 68 horsepower, and it's likely extremely rare and expensive, plus it's installed transversely.
All other diesel engines start at around 1.4 liters, usually with a turbocharger, and are always installed transversely.
Polo diesel engines of the age you mentioned have a 1.4-liter displacement, are installed transversely, and produce a remarkable 45 horsepower. With that power, you won't be able to move the Dacia very much.
You definitely won't find anything under 1.9.
Best regards,

Well, spontaneously... the Seat Terra Diesel has a very tight 1.3-liter engine, but it also doesn't offer any significant power.
Citroen AX Diesel (I believe, however, that this powerhouse has a 1.4-liter engine ).
And both have a problem. The engine is mounted transversely, facing the oncoming airflow.
Yes, a Smart typically has an engine with a displacement of around 0.8 liters in the CDI version... however, the engine is not only mounted transversely, but also at the rear.
If he still wants a small diesel engine, you could look into stationary engines from brands like Ruggerini, Deutz, or Hatz, but I can't imagine that would really be suitable for driving a vehicle.
I have a Ruggerini MD 191 engine in my Super Centaurus motorcycle. It's quite a beast compared to the original single-cylinder diesel, but I have to admit that a 50cc scooter can sometimes be a serious threat. This thing has a displacement of around 850cc, and even with that, it only provides moderate power for a motorcycle. What are you expecting with so little power in a car? It won't even be fuel-efficient.
Take Jan's advice to heart and get something bigger.

That makes me think of a whole lot of vehicles...
Audi 80 Diesel, model 827, with longitudinal engine (in all possible configurations).
Audi A4, Passat... However, all of these engines are significantly larger than the 1.2-liter Renault engine. Gruß Bertil

Hi,
The older 1.6-liter diesel engine actually seems quite suitable (Audi 80 / Passat 32B). And it's cheap. By the way, those 54 horsepower aren't really untamable.

Hello,
Is this still the old Dacia that was built in Romania for decades (with almost no changes)? Since it's a replica of the Renault 12, I suggest you try to find something suitable at Renault. Even if you find something, I doubt it will work because the transmission's gear ratios probably won't match well (I believe the Renault 12 wasn't available as a diesel, and neither was the Dacia). And since the mechanics of a Dacia aren't exactly the most robust, the question remains whether the drivetrain will even be able to handle the diesel's torque .

'The torque is irrelevant for the drive shafts! What matters is only the power, because the transmission converts the rotational speed and thus also the torque. The only thing that remains constant is P (minus the transmission efficiency).'

Torque is irrelevant for the drive shafts, really!
Well, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link !
And I could imagine that it might be the (original) clutch. But that's just a guess. I don't know for sure. I only know that these cars are not exactly known for their reliability (driving 1000 km without any problems is already a small miracle ). I can't say how much the transmission or clutch might contribute to such a 'failure rate.'
