Audi A4 B5 Automatic Transmission Problems?

I bought my wife an Audi A4 Avant, manufactured in 1997, with a 1.8L engine and 125 horsepower, equipped with a DFG gearbox. When I changed the transmission oil, I found a creamy white substance inside.

After that, I replaced the water cooler. Unfortunately, the transmission shifts slowly when cold and in a somewhat strange way. I think it won't last much longer.
According to the service manual, a 4-speed DFG transmission is installed. However, it definitely shifts 5 times! There's also no label or identifying letter visible on the transmission itself.

I can get a 1.8t transmission for a good price. It's a KBS CJQ 5-speed. Should that work? Or are there any issues with installing it?

Before you consider a replacement, maybe take another look at the transmission fluid.
It might still be slimy.

It would be advisable to open the sliding drawer and verschandeln it properly.

Unfortunately, an oil change won't help with such an old transmission; the only thing that will work is removing the deposits that have accumulated over 20 years in places where they shouldn't be.

I had already performed two oil changes and replaced the speed sensor because the transmission wasn't shifting at all initially.

Very strange. Or perhaps a transmission software update would help?

Okay, so I've removed the gearbox, disassembled it, and found that half of the friction plates were worn out. I've now replaced them.
After 3000 km of trouble-free driving, the reverse gear suddenly stopped working. Since I had already sold the car and wasn't going to disassemble the transmission again, I bought a damaged car with a manual transmission and converted it.
"No problem at all. You just need to replace the subframe, reprogram the control unit, and do some improvising with the wiring so that it starts and the reverse light works. If the car had ESP, I would also have to completely replace the ABS system. Fortunately, it doesn't."
