Hello everyone.
I want to change the oil and filter on my Ibiza SDI 1.9, manufactured in 2001/2002.
I don't know if it's a 6K or a 6L.
It definitely has a large fairing underneath the engine, and the oil filter is located behind the radiator, pointing upwards.
Before I start working (on stage), I'd rather ask what I need to be aware of. I don't want to experience any surprises in the expensive rental workshop!

'On my Corsa, I can do this without a lift. I need to get a new sealing ring for the screw and completely unscrew the filter. Then I'll put on a new one (making sure to wet the sealing ring with fresh oil beforehand), and that's it.'

How is Ibi doing?
Do I only need standard Torx screws for the engine cover (top and bottom)?
2. How does the oil filter work? Do you also need to lubricate the sealing ring with oil before installing it? And should it only be tightened by hand, or are there specific torque specifications?
3. Is the drain plug hidden somewhere specific, or does it require a specific size wrench? Which type of sealing ring do I need for it?

Please do not write 'suck the oil out with a pump'.

Best regards,

Hi,

It's almost exactly my car, just without the turbo. It's a 6K GP01, which is the facelift version of the 6K, but not yet the 6L. The 6L wasn't available until early 2002. I've adjusted the title; otherwise, it wouldn't have said much.

Why a rental workshop? Two ramps and a little space would suffice.

The lower cover can be removed using Torx and IMO SW10 keys. It's also possible that there's a Phillips head screw there, but you usually have those bits lying around anyway.

For the TDI, the drain plug is located at the rear (which is why the slight tilt caused by the ramp doesn't matter), and it's either a 17mm or 19mm socket, I don't remember exactly. It's definitely not a special socket. It's not hidden; you can see it immediately once you remove the cover and look underneath. Since the engine block of the SDI is different, I don't see any reason why it would have a different oil pan – so it's likely the same.

The filter is inside the plastic housing, and the housing itself is NOT replaced. All necessary seals are included with the new filters, and they are not very expensive (less than 10 euros at Seat, probably even cheaper at ATU/Bauhaus). There are two versions for the drain plug: the old version has a separate screw and seal, while the new version has a shrink-fitted seal. Just check your last workshop invoice (if they performed the oil change) to see what you have (i.e., whether it says "screw" or "seal").

Hmm... what else was there...?

Since it's made of plastic, I wouldn't force it too much; getting it out is already a problem. Instead, you should find or make something suitable, because the space for the usual oil filter removal tools is extremely tight. I didn't have anything else back then and had to tinker for a long time until I managed to get it to work with a rubber piece, a lever, and pliers to hold it together. The ring will lubricate itself when you install it... the smaller one goes on the part attached to the lid, and the larger one goes on the lid gasket. Everything is designed so that you can immediately see where each part goes.

If you want to do something good for your car, regardless of the maintenance schedule (every 60,000 km or 2 years), replace the air filter.

Hmm... any more questions?

Best regards,

Jan.

Thank you, it works icon_smile.gif.

MOT (Maintenance Inspection) is May 2005.
So, it must be the older one, because it will take a few months before he is handed over.

I think the workshop always had a vacuum system installed.
It's not my car icon_wink.gif.

Then I'll get started on it soon.
Is the plastic part of the oil filter also only tightened by hand?
Should the drain plug be tightened firmly or with caution? Is that an aluminum pan?

Hi,

5/02... it could also be a 6L... but that's revealed by looking at the registration document (6K vs 6L in the number) or by comparing it to the picture of my car during the oil change below icon_wink.gif.

I tightened the oil filter housing by hand and with this rubber piece – you can't apply much torque that way, but it seals well.

It's an aluminum tub, but the drain plug goes almost 2 cm into the threads (and it also feels quite thick there), so it should be able to withstand a fair amount of force. Since I didn't have a torque wrench, I tightened it with considerable force using a 20 cm wrench – which is roughly how tight it was before.

Best regards,

Jan.

'Thank you.'
It looks exactly the same from the engine bay, except for the 'SDI' marking and, of course, the temperature sensor on the dipstick.

It's not so easy to find the bleed screw icon_smile.gif.

It's also VW... and it also has the VW logo on it. You'll hardly find any parts underneath that have the Seat logo... almost everywhere, it says VW/Audi.

Okay, please provide the text you would like me to translate from German to English.
I bought the filter today.
I didn't buy a sealing ring for the oil drain plug this time. It's a 6K AYM model, and I'm not sure which size sealing ring I need.

Does anyone remember where the oil specifications were listed?
I can't find it anymore.
The 5W40 oil I bought has the specifications 502 00 and 505 00.
However, there are also other models like the 500.00, PD, etc.
I can't seem to find the section (in the manual?) that specifies the amount of oil (4.5 liters?) and the required specification.

Wow, those are all sentences.

I was unfortunately unable to decode what you mean.

When you change the oil, you usually buy:

- Oil
- Oil filter
- Seal for the drain plug.

Hi,

It's located quite far back in the manual. With 5W40 and the correct specification, you can't really go wrong.

The amount is roughly around 4.5 liters, depending on how thoroughly you empty it. In any case, about half a liter remained in my 5-liter canister.

Best regards,

Jan.

1. Ich habe keinen Dichtring für die Ölablassschraube gekauft, weil ich nicht weiß welchen. IsI cannot translate that without more context. It appears to be a code or abbreviation.
What size do I need, or should I just reuse the old one?

2. I'm looking for a resource that explains all of Volkswagen's oil specifications.

3. I can't seem to find the section in the manual that specifies the oil quantity and oil specification. I can only find the section that explains the minimum/maximum values, as well as the information on cylinders, valves, horsepower, Newton meters, and dimensions.

So, is it correct that it has a capacity of 4.5 liters?

*yawn* Why don't you just put in 3.5 liters and then check the oil level? You should be able to find how to read it on the dipstick in the manual... If it's too low, just add more and you're done! If you're so unsure about changing the oil, why don't you just let someone else do it?!

No, I want to get a proper oil change.

and if there's no information anywhere that definitively states that 4.5 liters fit in there, or if I can't find that information anymore, I'll simply ask.
just like I don't sell my car just because it's shaking, but instead look for the problem.

Hi,

Did you read my post?

It's pretty far back in the manual... just check the index.

4.5 liters *is* the filling amount, but I would still recommend using a dipstick. Otherwise, you'll end up with the same problem as the specialists at the Seat workshop, who simply poured in 4.5 liters and then the level was 1.5 cm above the "Max" mark because they hadn't drained enough oil beforehand.

Best regards,

Jan.
