Hello!

My Corolla D4D (direct injection) is due for its 60,000 km service soon, and I've already purchased the engine oil for it (which I always bring to the workshop myself).

So far, I have always used Castrol RS 0W40 oil, which meets the ACEA B3 and B4 specifications.
According to the label on the canister, the High Performer (Reifendirekt) oil only meets the ACEA B3 standard.
Toyota only specifies that the oil should be 'API CF,' which applies to both the high-performance oil and the Castrol oil.

While browsing here in the forum, I saw that B4 oils are specifically designed for direct injection engines.

Am I likely to experience any damage if I put ACEA B3-98 oil into a D4D engine?
Why was a separate oil specification (B4) introduced specifically for direct injection engines? I understand that direct injection engines require a special type of oil... but why specifically for direct injection?

What do you think: Should I use the oil that meets ACEA B3-98 in the D4D, since it also meets API CF and I already have it, or should I use an ACEA B4 oil?

Okay, and one more thing:

On the motoroel-direkt website, I found two different specifications regarding the ACEA classification of this oil:
On the oil type overview page, it states that this oil only meets the performance requirements according to standard B3-98.
'Fully synthetic engine oil, SAE 0W/40, API: SJ/CF, ACEA A3-98, B3/98'
http://www.motoroel-direkt.de/high_performer.html

On the page 'More information about the oil type,' it states that the oil meets the performance requirements according to standards B3 and B4, indicating that it is of a higher quality.
'High Performer 0W-40 is specifically designed for use in gasoline and diesel engines of passenger cars. High Performer 0W-40 meets the performance requirements according to: API - SJ(EC-Sequence VI)/CF, ACEA A3/B3/B4.'

Do you have any ideas about this matter yet? icon_question.gif

The best specialist for your engine is the manufacturer. That's why they took the time to write an operating manual, which certainly includes specifications for operating fluids. I simply cannot imagine that a modern direct injection engine like the D4D would be satisfied with just API CF oil.

How about you just check what your engine requires?
Or perhaps you should seek advice from Toyota?

The focus here is clearly on VW/Audi, as everyone knows the relevant standards by heart.
Purely based on my gut feeling, I would also tend to recommend an oil specifically designed for direct injection engines (->B4).

The manual actually only states that it should be API-CF oil. If this is not available, CD or CE oil can also be used.

I'm actually quite surprised, but my workshop has only been concerned with whether the oil meets the API CF standard so far.

Are PDs not direct injectors

That may have been unclear: I meant 'direct injection only' engines, as opposed to the 'port direct injection' engines.

The fundamental question of 'B3 oil in direct injection engines' remains the same, whether it's a VW or a Toyota engine.
In my case, only the VW oil specifications are not met. However, the oil does meet the 502.00 and 505.00 specifications.

I just reviewed the ACEA definition again.
B3 is intended for engines that are "primarily indirect injection".
B4 for engines that are "primarily directinjection".

Even if Toyota shouldn't demand a higher quality oil – which I still find hard to believe – I would spend a few extra euros and use a B4 oil.
