Hello,
Does anyone know what kind of signal is sent from the engine control unit (ECU) to the instrument cluster (IC) to provide the fuel consumption data? Specifically, is it a simple DC signal, a PWM signal, or something frequency-dependent? And what is the magnitude of the signal, e.g., in volts per liter (V/L) or Hertz per liter (Hz/L) or something else?
Hopefully someone knows this, because my TDI doesn't have an MFA, and I'd like to build something myself.
Thank you and best regards.
Maik.

Hm, why don't you connect an oscilloscope to it and mess around with the gas ?
You can convert a DA (digital-to-analog) signal using an analog voltmeter and attaching a new scale to it.
"Let me see it when it's done. I don't have an MFA either, just a daily mileage counter."
If it doesn't reach 1200, it means it's using a lot of fuel, because for some reason, my tank holds 70 liters.

I don't know what the f*ck it was.

It was too stressful for me to run to the street with the oscilloscope, pull extension cords through the hallway, and then take out the AI unit. I thought someone here would know. There are always so many smart people around here .
'Don't worry, it'll get better. I've already installed an LCD screen and a controller to display things like maximum speed, travel time, average speed, outside/inside temperature, and oil temperature. I also wanted to display the maximum and average fuel consumption.'

"How did you do that with the controller? I'm also in the process of building a kind of multi-function display. However, I'm not familiar with the controllers for LCD displays. I mainly want to display things like boost pressure, voltage, etc. I would be very grateful for any tips."

'Hello, I've been using a Siemens 80C537 microcontroller and a small 2x8 LCD display since 1996. I now have some free time and want to switch to a Microchip PIC microcontroller, rewrite the program, and add new features while removing features that are no longer needed. The programming is done in assembly language.'
What exactly are you planning to do, and how do you intend to solve it?

I was thinking of using a 4-line (or possibly more) or a dot-matrix display to show multiple data points simultaneously, without having to switch between them. Since my car already has a MFA (Multi-Function Display), I wanted to display different information, such as voltage, oil temperature, boost pressure, etc. The display would be mounted in the headliner, near the light (which is at a nice angle in the Golf 4). That's my idea so far, but I haven't found anything yet on how to transmit the data from the car to the display's controller.
It's been a long time (a very long time, actually) since I last worked with assembly language. VW Golf V, 1,9 TDI, 77KW, BLS, 2007;

Hi,
Regarding data transmission: If you only need data like boost pressure, voltage, and temperatures, then connect it to your own sensors. This is likely to be much simpler and, above all, more reliable than tapping into the original sensor system.
Even a very small AVR microcontroller has enough analog inputs to easily handle this. Knowledge about controlling the LCD, etc., can be found, among other places, at www.mikrocontroller.net.

I completely agree with Jan on that.
But what about the signal for the power consumption display now ?
Does anyone have any information about that?
Sure, here's the translation:
'Best regards,' or 'Sincerely,'.

I also have a link here that might be interesting. People have also looked into this (although in a somewhat more extreme way).

Okay, now I know that the consumption signal is a PWM signal. Let's see if I can figure out how it relates to the actual consumption.
Thank you very much.

There is some information about the consumption signal from the 1Z.

Hello, I was just about to measure the power consumption signal and unfortunately discovered that pin 9 of the control unit, where the signal should be present, is not connected. No one at VW could give me a part number for a repair wiring harness. Does anyone here have a part number for a connector for an engine control unit from a VW 1Z, year of manufacture 1994, with engine code 028906021C?
Thank you and best regards.
Maik.
