Hello,

I have the following problem with my Passat 3B (01/00) with an 85 kW PD engine:
"As soon as the car is put into a higher gear, the clutch starts to slip. Slipping the clutch becomes possible only at approximately 1400-1600 RPM; below that, the engine will stall quickly. This problem seems to be temperature-dependent (it's more likely to occur in warm weather). If the car is left standing for a few hours or driven for a long distance without shifting, everything normalizes again. The clutch now has approximately 80,000 km (50,000 miles) on it. This issue also occurred with the previous clutch, around 60-80,000 km (37-50,000 miles). The old clutch was replaced as part of a complete engine overhaul at approximately 170,000 km (105,000 miles)."
The old (clutch) assembly was in good condition; the friction surface was clean, the springs were intact, and there was no corrosion. The pads had only about 1/3 of their material worn off.

Does anyone have any idea where this plucking might be coming from?

Hi,

"When you say that the old clutch still had about 1/3 of its lining left at around 170,000 km and was slipping, it reminds me of my time with Ford. There was a problem where the clutch lining would become extremely smooth over time when the clutch wasn't under much load, which then led to the slippage you described. I got the tip to start in third gear and let the clutch slip slightly, which actually helped."

If I remember correctly, there used to be another thread in this forum about a clutch that was slipping. As far as I recall, the entire issue was resolved with a single action.

Regards,
Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

I once did a test when the clutch was back to its "normal operating temperature":

When I hold the car with the brake and keep the clutch at the friction point, everything works smoothly (no jerking). However, as soon as I release the brake and the car starts to move, it begins to jerk.
It appears that the "jerking" only occurs when the clutch is warm and there are differences in speed between the disc and the flywheel, specifically below 800 RPM.

Hmm, it sounds like a dual-mass flywheel issue. Perhaps the oil in the DMF is not damping as effectively when hot because it has become too thin. That's my guess. I'm not entirely sure if my theory is correct, though! Feel free to correct me.

Hello.

In a dual-mass flywheel, there are suspension elements installed; there is no oil involved! icon_biggrin.gif

Hello.

In a dual-mass flywheel, there are suspension elements installed; there is no oil involved!

And they are even made of rubber icon_question.gif icon_idea.gif icon_exclaim.gif icon_wink.gif.

The 2MSR issue with the AJM engine (resulting in 115 hp) is well-known, and there was even a VW recall campaign related to it, specifically in the Passat. However, if your car was manufactured in 2000, you might already have the ATJ engine icon_rolleyes.gif.

Problem description: Severe vibrations or jerking at idle in engines with the engine code AJM and a 5-speed manual transmission.
Cause: Imbalance in the dual-mass flywheel can cause strong vibrations, especially when idling.
Change: Conceptual change involving the use of an ATJ engine.
Customer service solution: In cases of persistent complaints, please contact your product support team.

Conclusion: To step on someone's toes icon_wink.gif.
