Hello,
I installed the axles from a VR6 engine on my Golf 3, and also retrofitted ABS/EDS at the same time! I replaced the wiring harness, control unit, and brake booster - no mixed parts.
After everything was wired and installed, I bled the brakes multiple times using a bleeding device.
During the initial test drive, the warning light only flickered briefly and immediately went out. During a full stop on a wet road, no ABS function was noticeable. Subsequently, I had the error memory read, which indicated "Wheel sensor front left defective."
When I replaced the wheel sensor and started the engine, both ABS warning lights illuminated, both in the speedometer and to the left of the airbag light. I then cleared the error, but it didn't reappear, yet both lights are still on and the ABS is not working.
What could it be, or what is causing the lights to turn on without any errors in the control unit? I'm really at a loss, and I would be grateful for any advice.

Good evening...
Please check first if the brake fluid level warning sensor is defective.
As far as I know, VW cars don't have an ABS light on the dashboard. It might be a warning light for brake pad wear or low brake fluid. If it's not that, check the two relays located above the fuse box; I had a problem with those before. If that's not the issue either, double-check all the operating voltages for the ABS system. Hopefully, this helps you get started.

I eventually figured it out myself. The problem was with the warning light on the dashboard. In my 1997 car, the ABS system used a type of control unit as a warning light. Up until 1995, the warning light was a simple lamp that was either on or off. Consequently, the control unit couldn't understand the simpler control system from before 1995 and displayed an error, even though everything was actually okay.
I hope this helps others with their renovations as well.
