ABS Sensor Replacement: G3 Guide & Tutorial

Hi,

After a friend came to me with a faulty ABS sensor on his Ibiza, it seems like the problem has now affected my Golf -> the ABS light is on.

How quickly and easily can the sensor be replaced?

Subject: ABS request for A61 track day this weekend.

I'm planning to go to the A61 track this weekend and would really appreciate having ABS (it's always useful there!). However, I only have a short window of time available on Saturday afternoon, if at all.

Can this swap be done in 30 minutes (without a lift, using a jack)?

I think the wheel bearings need to be removed, but that's just my guess.
Extremely vague memory...

I can't imagine that. The wheel bearings would have to come completely out in order to replace the rotor.

I want to replace the sensor that is screwed into the RL housing.

If the sensors are not stuck in the wheel bearing housing, it shouldn't be a problem.

- Jack up.
- Flat tire.
- Disconnect the plug.
- Loosen the screw (I think it's an M5 Allen screw).
- Remove the old sensor from the wheel bearing housing.

-new, everything's back on, ready to go.

Let's assume that you have a sensor on the rear door that is failing. Replacing it isn't quite as difficult as it is on the front door .

Remove the old sensor from the wheel bearing housing .

'Forcing it out somehow' would probably be a more accurate description.

I had to really force mine out because they were stuck in the bore. Then, I used a Dremel or something similar to grind away the rust from the bore, and possibly used a magnet to 'suck up' any metal shavings near the toothed ring. After that, I installed the new one. Without grinding, the new one would be very difficult to insert and remove, and I was afraid of damaging the new sensor during installation, so I preferred to grind everything away.

But I don't think half an hour is enough.
