Hello fellow mechanics!

I plan to replace my MSG (1) with the following (2).

1.

VW Part No.: 028 906 021 GL

Bosch Part Number: 0 281 001 656

Data as of: 1446.

Date: June 21, 1997.

2.

VW Part No.: 038 906 018 GA

Bosch Part Number: 0 281 010 170

Data as of: 2605.

Date: 04/27/99

Okay, those are the basic specifications for now. I'm aware that the swap might require other hardware changes, and I've already planned for those and have almost everything I need.

The last hurdle for me now is whether my "older" AFN will work with the "newer" software, or if there will be any issues. Although, the engines themselves haven't really changed much.

Unfortunately, I lack the sources needed for this.

And that's why I'm asking my question here.

Best regards,
Nash.

Why do you even want to trade?
The hardware of the two control units is identical, except for the connectors, which would require modifications.
Require cable trees - nearly identical.

Best regards,
Rudi

Because the new MSG controller has CAN functionality, I can also install a 920 speedometer in it.

To operate CAN tachometers in cars without a CAN bus, there are, as far as I know, ready-made solutions available.
Adapters that convert the corresponding signals to CAN.

Rudi

But how does the whole WFS thing work then? Because it probably isn't possible to downgrade from generation 3 to 1. And I really wanted to keep all of that.

Or is this a newer adapter that I'm not yet familiar with?

WFS geht bei den ollen Gurken in jedem Fall über K-Line. Even...
The subsequent generation of MSTGs (EDC15) continued to communicate primarily via K-Line for quite some time.

Rudi

Well, the issue isn't really with the K-Line.

What I mean is, if I install a WFS3 AI unit with the CAN adapter, will it definitely not be possible to connect it to my WFS1 messaging system, or are there things I don't know about yet?

And I don't want to turn it off or bypass it.

Are you sure that the 018GA was installed with a WFS3 AI unit?

I know that the 018 GA is a WFS2-MSG, but it is certainly possible to connect a WFS3-Ki to it.

I'm also certain that the new control unit (Ki) cannot be linked to my current main system (WFS1), which is why I'm doing the conversion.

... but it is certainly possible to train a WFS3-AI on it.
Good luck!
Alternatively, you could install a separate WFS control unit, such as the one used in the Golf 3.
