Hello,

Unfortunately, I haven't found anything. My question is: Can I simply unscrew the lid and screw it back on again without having to readjust anything? So, is the legendary icon_smile.gif lid something like a viewing window, or is it the top part of the pump where you adjust the mixture to be rich or lean?

Sorry for the silly questions, but I haven't actually tried using the pump yet. Because if I have to adjust something new (within a 0.1 mm range icon_eek.gif), I'd rather not touch it myself.

Best regards.
David.

EDIT: Wow, I just called the Bosch workshop (I had nothing to do at work icon_wink.gif). I wanted to know how they came to the conclusion that the mass airflow sensor was defective. Here's the bombshell:

'the icon_question.gif metering device has become clogged.'
Diagnosis made via phone call to a 'diesel repair shop,' with a disclaimer.
'other sources of error'
-> So, the pump probably wasn't even touched, there was no hysteresis test, nothing.

And I paid 45 euros for that...
'The hysteresis test can only be performed on the disassembled unit, and for that, we would have had to send it back to the manufacturer.'

Are you horny? I could have brought the car to the vet instead...

What do you think about that?

Hi David,

"These are two lids. If you only unscrew the top one, nothing should normally happen." Just think about how you want to loosen the setscrew. icon_sad.gif

Well, Bosch services (especially the diesel specialists!) have quite a bit of experience in that area...
The hysteresis test can also be performed while the pump is installed, but the workshop needs to have the appropriate measuring equipment available, which is often not the case. In that situation, the pump is removed and sent to someone who is qualified to perform the test. Since installing and removing the pump is the most time-consuming part, the pump will be replaced directly. icon_sad.gif

Thank you for the answer, Bertil.
I'll see what I can do today.

But charging 45 euros for a phone call is just outrageous. Mainly, I had the car there before for the same problem, and they said it was probably due to a timing belt that was installed incorrectly...
Allegedly, the VW workshop made a mistake back then. The funny thing is, after the adjustment, the car performed exactly the same as it did before.
I don't think I'll go there again. icon_sad.gif

I just checked: I can't get the screw off, thanks a lot, VW! I'll have to ask a friend; he has a lot of specialized tools. How did you get them? Did you carve them yourself, or did you borrow them?

Okay, it's almost time now:

Since I want to keep using the car, I'm going to have the pump replaced now.
I estimate that it will cost me around 1500 euros.

I want to have the fuel pump and the injectors replaced. Rainer once advised me to have the thermostat (or the water pump?) replaced at the same time. I will do the same, as the car isn't reaching the proper operating temperature.

Is it advisable to replace the timing belt now? The current mileage is 217,000 km. The next scheduled replacement is at 270,000 km. He's going to have to go down anyway...

Is there anything else I should keep in mind?
