KI for 35i B4 - Problems after starter repair/battery replacement

Hello everyone,

I have already found some information about AI failures in the 35i B4; however, I would still like to get your valued opinion on my problem:

Vehicle: 35i B4, manufactured in 03/96, with AFN TDI; Bosch starter motor with 1.9kW

Initially, there were sporadic LCD clock and MFA failures at cold start; only at very low outdoor temperatures, where the starter also worked relatively weakly.
When the engine is running hot, everything seems to be working perfectly... (no other AI issues).

--> Battery replacement, as the old one was already 5 years old ---> hardly any improvement in the problem
--> Starter disassembled, allow electrician to view in disassembled state;
--> New brushes/charcoal plate installed, as the old charcoal was almost completely worn out;
--> Starter powerful as always BUT:

--> Still LCD clock and MFA failures, very often now even when the engine is warm
--> Voltage and Current Measurement: New battery shows a voltage of 10.5V at engine start; Starter consumes approximately 230 Amperes
--> According to the Arbö, the starter's power consumption (1.9kW) is too high.

--> The current status is the LCD clock/MFA failure upon cold start and occasionally also upon warm start...
--> The main power cable has received a new cable clamp (gear), + the starter power supply is also functioning correctly...

What do you think? Is it really the starter; maybe the runner winding is partially broken? Or a tick from the instrument panel; Elkos in A.??

During the drive, the AI functions perfectly...

I would appreciate any input. I don't like to spend €150 on a starter kit and then the AI might still not work.

Does the display only malfunction during the starter's operation, or even when the engine has already started?

Uhr und MFA fallen aus, sobald der Starter angeht (orgelt), wenn der Motor läuft kommen die Displays meist mit kurzem Schnarren.. ansonsten keine Ausfälle..nur beim Start!

Die Aussage, das 230 Ampere zu viel seien, ist wie gesagt vom Autofahrerklub ARBÖ...

Was ich noch nachvollziehen kann, ist, das mit den neuen Kohleplatten der Starter scheinbar mehr Strom saugt, als vorher...(hab nur von vorher keine Messwerte)

109er Relais ist auch neues drinnen..(Verzweilfungsakt)

Bei 10,5V sollte das KI definitiv noch nicht spinnen.

Wie wurde die Spannung ermittelt? Mit einem trägen Multimeter während eines sehr kurzen Startvorgangs? Oder richtig mit Oszi?

Evtl mal die Spannung direkt am KI mit einem Oszi aufnehmen. Evtl hält die Batterie ja die 10,5V aber an anderen Stellen fällt die Spannung so weit ab, dass es für's KI reicht (Batt-Anschlussklemmen, Massekabel, ...).

Nur aus Interesse: Was für eine Batterie wurde verbaut? Hierbei ist der Kaltstartstrom weit interessanter als die Kapazität.

Ich hab die Spannung mit einem analogen Norma Messgerät gemessen und der ARBÖ hatte ein eigenes Messgerät für KFZ... beide Ergebnisse waren bis auf die zehntel Volt ident...

Ok, bliebe nur noch mal die Spannung am KI bzw in dessen Nähe (z.B. Sicherungskastenabgang Richtung KI) während des Starts zu messen, siehe mein vorheriger Post.

Sonst geht mein Tip klar Richtung KI. Wenn du dich intern nicht dran traust, dann könnte eine externe Diode + dickem Elko evtl schon Abhilfe schaffen.

Verständlich ist's mir trotzdem nicht ganz wenn die Spannung wirklich nicht tiefer als 10,5V sinkt. Aber drüber würde wohl nur ein Oszi Screenshot Aufklärung bringen.

[Translating...]So, habe gestern einen Austauschstarter eingebaut:

Die ersten 3 Kaltstarts in der Garage (+3°C) ok; KI fiel nicht mehr aus..

Heute morgen unterm Carport und bei knapp 0° Aussentemperatur waren die LCD´s wieder weg!

Werd mir jetzt wohl mal das KI vornehmen, auf Kalte Lötstellen untersuchen und eventuell die Elkos tauschen... ich schliess den Starter jetzt mal aus; weil mit 2 verschiedenen Startern und 2 Batterien noch immer (abgeschwächt) das selbe Problem...des kanns net sein...

Ich lob mir mein Jetta, wo nix drin is, kann nix kaputt gehn
